That, and many (most?) of Shout's properties are totally over and done, and now here's a show that still has a possibility of all new material. I don't follow Shout that closely, do they have much original content?

As far as I'm aware, MST would be the first. They mostly ride the nostalgia wagon, and they ride high with it.
But this tells me a lot about the new MST reboot. It's most definitely going to be streamed, and might be available on platforms like Hulu or Netflix. It also might explain how Rifftrax is able to stream the show through their website.
Food for thought: now that Jim and Joel have been bought out, Shout now has full control over the KTMA episodes. It might mean nothing, but if it means anything then SQUEE.

Wow! Shout Factory can do no wrong at this point, so I'm totally okay with it.

That's really interesting. I wonder what this will mean for future releases. Will Shout be the distributor for the new episodes as well?

Shout deserves it. They've treated the franchise with a ton of respect. Food for thought: now that Jim and Joel have been bought out, Shout now has full control over the KTMA episodes. It might mean nothing, but if it means anything then SQUEE. Good point! I hadn't considered this. Very interesting...

I admit when hearing this news the first thing I thought was "wonder how people would have reacted if it was Rhino who bought the rights years ago instead"

I admit when hearing this news the first thing I thought was "wonder how people would have reacted if it was Rhino who bought the rights years ago instead" Rhino was good once upon a time...when they got sold to Warner they went south... Shout was started by the same people that started Rhino. One of the top dudes at Shout! worked on MST when he was at Rhino too.

Shout now has full control over the KTMA episodes. It might mean nothing, but if it means anything then SQUEE. Maybe. But it's very possible that BBI didn't technically own any of the KTMA stuff (even though we all know the word is that Mallon has the tapes of the eps in his basement). It could be that they're not really owned by anyone because they were done for KTMA before BBI was created but KTMA is long gone.

The pilot should at least be releasable in full DVD glory regardless of the mess that the rest of the KTMA episodes may be in. Also Shout's always been amazing at releasing "unattainable" episodes and I'm sure they knew that this deal was in the works. It wouldn't surprise me if they had been researching the legal issues involved with releasing those episodes. Maybe they'll be making an announcement about that (one way or another) soon. Anyway that's just my optimistic stance.

Keep in mind my KTMA comment is more or less just an optimistic idea of the possibilities this deal might lead to. Now that the library is in different hands, the lost episodes may not be in a "when hell freezes over" situation. Shout likely knows that there are fans who at the very least are interested in seeing these episodes and might be game in jumping through the hoops to get them into our greedy hands.
But it's still a daydream at this point. I'm well aware of how unlikely it is.

I might do a "Likelihood for KTMA Episodes to Get Released" list just for fun, but honestly I don't see SF EVER releasing those. Not just because of Joel & Co. firmly saying "NO" and possible legal issues... the episodes themselves aren't worth more than a historical curiosity to most casual fans. It would be cool to see another "Glimpse of the KTMA Days" extra though.
There are quite a few KTMA films I'd like to see RE-riffed! Especially SST-DEATH FLIGHT.

Per the official newsletter that was sent out prior to Season 2, it was heavily implied that they were going to riff SST-DEATH FLIGHT that season. Presumably, the rights couldn't be cleared.

Now these are the kind of suggestions Joel probably wants from the fan base about ideas for the reboot. Re-riffing old KTMA, or old movies that they wanted to riff but couldn't clear the rights. The nice thing now is they will be obtaining rights to movies for streaming and physical release, so no more unreleasable movies!!!

I think it goes without saying that the fanbase wants only one thing: ANOTHER riff of Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. Because the three we have already aren't enough.
