I am flabergasted that they were able to put those features on DVD. Cudos to the Shout Factory.

Is the fact that they are giving this away as a free bonus have anything to do with their ability to release it?

Damn, now I'm going to have to spend almost twice as much (with shipping) to get this bonus disc, as I would from Amazon.

Getting it a month earlier makes the higher price a little more worth it too. Let's hope so. It would cost me $91 CDN to get this from SF, vs. $42 CDN I paid for the last set from Amazon.

First time I've ordered a new set from Shout. Rationalized it by not buying recently released set at this time. Plus, I've always regretted not getting the prior bonus disks from Shout. Usually a $60 purchase gives me incredible pause. This took me an hour to order after seeing the tweet. With the reboot, reunion, and possibility of more great release surprises from Shout (lost episodes? ), what a great time to be an MST3K fan.

Those previous bonus discs were compilations of the serial shorts correct? I never bothered trying to order those, but I can't recall if any of those are still on the yet to be released likeliness list?

Something I wondered... does "*Batman and Robin excepted" at the bottom of the press release mean it'll be missing those segments?

Oh man! I just pre-ordered for sure!
Yeah, it's about $20 more than Amazon, but that bonus disc alone is well worth it. I'll bet that disc will end up being sold for quite a lot on ebay and the like.
Oddly, I was just looking over my checklist – which is a stack of print outs I compiled years back featuring every episode and special – and ever since volume 13 I've been using a yellow highlighter to mark off the episodes that are on DVD. It has been highly satisfying recently, as I've been able to check off full seasons, but just a few days ago I was looking at the ratty piece of paper and noted that so many of the things in the "other" column aren't getting any love. Looking forward to getting home and highlighting the Blockbuster specials!

Something I wondered... does "* Batman and Robin excepted" at the bottom of the press release mean it'll be missing those segments? "Enjoy this time capsule from an era when mammoth budgets were not exclusive to superhero movies.* *Batman and Robin excepted" It's referring to Batman and Robin being the only superhero movie mentioned in these specials (since it's like every other big movie these days are superhero related)

I never bothered trying to order those, but I can't recall if any of those are still on the yet to be released likeliness list? Yes, that's right. One bonus disk (with Vol. XXV) contained the 'complete' Commando Cody and Radar Men From the Moon serial from Season 1 with a new intro by Josh Weinstein. The other bonus disk (with Vol. XXVII, I believe?) included the other three serialized shorts--The Phantom Creeps, The Undersea Kingdom, and General Hospital. All of the shorts on both disks have been released with their respective episodes since those two releases.

The second serial shorts disc isn't really worth hunting down, unless you're a completionist, since as mentioned all the segments are on their respective episode DVDs and to my knowledge none of those volumes are hard to find. The Commando Cody one is worth getting if you're a collector, as it is the most serials they've covered so it makes for a long enough compilation. Plus you have the aforementioned new intro.
But man, that Summer Blockbusters DVD is something special!
What else hasn't seen a DVD release that would be ripe for a bonus pre-order incentive? Poopie Parade of Values and Play Mistie for Me Triple Decker comes to mind.
Did This Is MST3K, The MST Scrapbook, or Poopie II ever appear on DVD? Tom Servo's Favorite Host Segments might also be something worth releasing, I know Vol. 1 had a DVD from Best Brains. I forgot if those included new content.
Turkey Day '93 and Turkey Day '94 have also never been released, though I can't see it happening given all the legal issues involving Adam West and the random fans.

Even though I've seen all the shorts with their respective episodes, I do enjoy the shorts compilations for quick spurts of breif MST when I can't watch a full episode. For that alone I adore my serial discs (even though the serials aren't the greatest moments in MST history), and will probably always be kicking myself for not getting Rhino's Shorts Volume 3 disc with their exclusive Essentials release. It's the only MST disc I have ever missed out on.
Does one "need" these discs? Probably not. The Commando Cody one is nice to have for Josh's intro, but the second serial disc is pretty basic. Like how Shorts Volume 1 had those neat Servo intros but Volume 2 just had the shorts themselves.
These Blockbuster specials are worth having though. Whether they're releasing them through good relations with the studios or whether the trailers riffed on are a grey area in film rights, I'm not sure, but I'm jumping on it regardless.
One thing I'm always hoping for is Mike, Servo, and Crow's appearance on Good Morning America promoting the 1998 Godzilla movie by offering Godzilla trivia and riffing on select scenes from the classic Godzilla movies King Kong vs. Godzilla, Godzilla vs. Hedorah, and Godzilla vs. Gigan. With Toho it'll probably be a no go, but I can dream.
