'Tis the season, and all that! I don't celebrate Festivus, but I know it was yesterday and a lot of people were very ready to engage in the airing of grievances. Hannukah starts tonight, and I'm getting ready for Christmas tomorrow, which I fully intend to celebrate until Groundhog's Day/Brigit's Day/Candlemas/whatever you call February 2nd. I know Pancha Ganapati is happening right now but, sadly, I don't know a lot about it. Basically, there's a lot of things being celebrated now, just as there have been since October 31st and as there will be until Valentine's Day.
So... here at about the hump of it all, I hope you're all having a great time, and that the season's ready to finally end 2016, The Year That Wouldn't Knock It Off. That sounds cynical, but I'm actually kind of stoked about the holidays this year. Like, a lot of bad stuff happened this year... a lot... and much of that bad stuff has fallout that we'll be dealing with for a while, and we shouldn't minimize that. But taking some time amid all the madness to be of good cheer feels like a really sensible kind of crazy that I can get behind. As a species, we once again made it to the darkest day of the year and beyond.
(Weird historical/scientific note: apparently the solstice earlier this week wasn't just the darkest day of the year. Thanks to a lunar eclipse, it was the darkest night that we'll see for a loooong time. So it just gets brighter from here, and four or so centuries from now they get to talk about how it hasn't been this dark since 2016.)
So... yeah. Wherever you are this year, and whatever's happening, I hope you're having happy holidays. Have a Swayze Christmas, if that's okay, as our favorite puppet show said, and let's see if we can keep the mirth and merriment alive in the face of whatever the coming year might bring. Take care, all!
