The skits were much stronger than the riffing here. The fan group MFT3K riffed this in the early 2000's, and that version is hard to get out of my head, especially since I watched it again a few months ago. (It's on archive.org if you're curious.) The bot's reactions to the giant female robot are similar in both. The movie was really nipped and tucked quite a bit. I think the scene mentioning Akton's ability to see into the future was cut, yet there are riffs referring to this ability! And yeah, the frame rate seemed weird in places, even on non FX shots. Someone is probably building a BB-Servo now as we speak.

This one seems to be getting a lot of love on here and elsewhere, but for me it's by far the weakest episode of the season and probably one of the weakest episodes in MST3K history. Minus two or three jokes, the riffing just isn't very good and the movie is a total slog. I was actually really looking forward to this one when I first heard it was going to be in the new season, but it just doesn't click for me.

I really hate this movie, so it's hard to sit through this episode. Nothing really stuck with me, I've only watched all these episodes once, with the exception of Cry Wilderness and Wizards of the Lost Kingdom II, so it's hard to remember what riffs and host segments go where. I was going to re-watch all the eps, but I don't know if I could stand to for this one.

I found this episode similar to Catalina Caper and Hobgoblins, in the sense that they're riffing a film that *seems* to be trying to be funny in it's own right, and that kinda bogs the riffing down. That said the film offers plenty of riffing material.
Missed Riff Opportunity: The seats on Akton's ship look SO MUCH like the dune buggies from Disneyland's Haunted Mansion, i was waiting for one of them to make a riff on that, but.... nothing. Bah.
The voice of the robot L sounded so familiar to me, I couldn't pinpoint where I'd heard the voice before or who the actor was. A look on IMDB, and I realized why the voice sounded so familiar. It's the same guy that voiced Gizmoduck on "DuckTales"! (Whoo-Hoo!)*
They make a joke about how it would have been awesome if this film had pre-dated "Star Wars" given how much it clearly steals from said film.... then later Jonah comments that they're ripping off "Spaceballs".... a film that it *did* pre-date! HA!
It's funny that there's a "Guardians of the Galaxy" riff at one point, and David Hasselhoff is in this film, given that Hasselhoff has a couple cameos in Guardians Vol. 2. Something that the writing team probably weren't aware of when writing this episode. Interesting coincidence.
I loved the running gag about the pole-sliding.
Not to get on the "Sci-Fi Channel era hating" bandwagon, but let me just say that if this movie had been featured during the Sci-Fi era, they would have been making wisecracks about Stella's clothing (or lack thereof) every 2 minutes or so. I was glad that here they made only one joke about it, and then left it at that.
Some nifty theater interactions: Crow pretends to have a convo with a guard in an elevator, then later he acts like an elevator operator, Servo goes sledding, etc.
Ugh, AGAIN they felt the need to acknowledge the fact that Servo has no eyes. Clearly someone on the writing staff must really be bugged by this.
Seinfeld's cameo was only interesting to me due to the fact that Joel said a few years ago that he offered the show to Seinfeld back in 1989 to host, but Seinfeld couldn't because he was in the midst of getting his sitcom on NBC together. Other than that, I found his cameo pointless and forgettable. In general, Seinfeld never comes off well when having to do material that wasn't written by him (unless it's Larry David writing for him), so usually cameos by Seinfeld are awkward as Hell, hence why he rarely does these cameos on shows.
Overall...... the episode was kinda.... average. I laughed consistently, but personally with a Star Wars knock-off, David Hasselhoff & Christopher Plummer playing son and father, a robot with a strange southern accent, you'd think this episode would have had a gold mine for riffs, but a alas, it's just average.
* = And, now the DuckTales theme is in your head. Sorry!

Starcrash definitely crossed my mind when I saw GOTG 2. The movie was something Peter Quill probably saw as a kid, and a Starcrash version of the Hoff appearing would have made sense in the context of the plot, even if only a few people got the reference. P.S. The MFT3K riff of this is hilarious. You can find it on archive.org.

I'll read the other comments momentarily.
I thought "Starcarsh" was one lousy movie. Enjoyably lousy, but still lousy. While Caroline Munro was...very attractive (okay, VERY attractive), I just wish her character was better written. She kept ending up as a damsel in distress, rather than a strong heroine. And I can't understand why I'm concerned over the script for "Starcrash"; it looked like the filmmakers weren't. Well, at least Christopher Plummer got a trip to Rome out of the deal.
As for the ep, the riffing was very good, particularly the UFO song. The host segments were OK, though Jonah was mad to try and take on the House of Mouse. (I understand Lucas himself can be cool about these things, but Disney...) And I thought that Jerry Seinfeld's appearance was funny, though I wish they'd done it in the old Hexfield manner, so he could interact with Kinga & Max.
I thought it turned out pretty well.

I was pretty excited about Hasselhoff but the jokes just weren't makin' it on this one. I'm going in order and giving each ep an individual ranking and this one is dead last with comfort. Hoping that it ends up being the worst because I'd hate to think there's another like it among the final 8 eps of the season

Months later, and I still can't get through this one. Even the sexy lady in the leather bikini doesn't help, as she appears to be made entirely of plastic. Everything about the movie--the ripped-off characters, plot elements, the dubbing, the sets, etc.--distracts the hell out of me. I have the same problem with "Wizards of the Lost World" and its sequel. When the movie is this kind of lame, it draws my attention and if the laughs aren't amazing I tune out.
Don't ask me why, after all that, I enjoy "Deathstalker" or "Final Sacrifice." Somehow those movies have an element of sincerity (okay, not really so much for "Deathstalker") but something about them feels like a genuine effort, and for me it makes a difference.

Rewatched this one tonight with my little one. Been a long time. Somehow I enjoyed much more than I have in the past. Lots of great riffs and great ideas in the theater.
Still not a top tier for me.

I'm halfway through this one. So far, episode of the season for me. However, I can't help but notice that portions of the movie are running at a lower frame rate. Can anyone familiar with the unriffed version weigh in on this? Was this some sort of attempt at making the movie seem more otherworldly, or did the MST3K editors screw something up? I only noticed such a thing during effects shots. I think it's the fault of the way the effects were done originally, slowing down the action by showing each frame twice. The same "strobe" effect is in Carnival Magic. It makes it almost unwatchable for me. I don't know how that got past QC. It's obviously being output at the wrong frame level. I doubt it'll ever be corrected, and at least it hasn't happened again*. (*unless you count the Shout! reissue of Herc Against the Moon Men, which has this horrible "strobe" effect in spades)

Rewatching part of this as part of a larger mini-project. Also noticing the frame rate issue. Its giving me a headache. Odd I didn't notice it the first time.
Also: Man I forgot how much they edited the crap out of the film. The first 30 minutes are totally incomprehensible. And the movie wasn't very coherent to begin with.
