My fellow MSTies, I bear good news. I just met someone whom I strongly believe has taped recordings of the first KTMA episodes, probably even the last missing K03!
A couple days ago, someone who goes by the name FartingLion contacted me based on my interest of MST3K. We hit things off pretty well and I could tell he was also a big fan, but then he casually asked me if I would be interested in having the first 3 KTMA episodes. Of course I just thought he was joking, but he was actually serious. Apparently his brothers taped lots of stuff from KTMA, and the tapes he has were recorded over the air back in 1988 Minneapolis, which is what got him and his bros hooked on the show. Honestly he didn't know just how big a deal these tapes are, since he hasn't been too active in the MST3K fandom.
He is positive he has the first 2 episodes on tape based on the titles, though he can't fully confirm the 3rd one just yet since he doesn't have access to them right now, but he told me he does remember seeing K03 when going through the whole series a few years ago so he probably has it somewhere. He's currently living in Germany (for university studies I believe), but he said he'll be flying back to Minneapolis in a couple weeks, then he can be sure K03 is the real deal (and not the season 3 redo), and then share it and the other tapes with the world. He also told me he has a first-gen recording of K04, which might also be of interest since I've heard that one doesn't have any fresh copies.
I know this all might sound hard to believe, but I can tell this guy is legit. Should have more to share in two weeks time! I've also invited the guy to join this forum, so expect him show up here soon and you can bombard him with questions then.
WHAT DO YOU THINK, SIRS???

Color me somewhat skeptical, but intrigued.
It's amazing to think that someone's just been sitting on these for 29 years and didn't know people were looking for them. People other than Jim Mallon, lol.
Pass this along to MST3KInfo. Even if Sampo is a curmudgeon, he might be interested in covering this.

Alrighty, just sent an email. I asked since I'm not on twitter right now and wanted to be sure Sampo could see it.

Very cool, I hope it pans out to be a good old-fashioned tape find! Would love to hear more about this as it develops.

Keep in mind that Doctor Who episodes have been discovered once in a great while in someone's private collection. And Doctor Who is one of the most infamous cases of missing episodes I know of.

I assume they still read their emails? Sampo used to be good at responding to email or responding to comments in Episode Discussions, but he never acknowledged the email or comment I left regarding a role Beez played on the show. That aside, congrats on finding this guy, and I too hope he's legit.

Crossing my fingers and toes here that this pans out! Even though Joel released K01 and K02 it would be neat to see those with commercials as they actually aired. Hope these tapes are in good shape after 29 years.
If you don't already have somebody lined up with the gear to digitize these, I'd like to volunteer my services. I have professional Panasonic S-VHS decks with built in time base corrector and noise reduction. I used them to transfer all my MST off air tapes to DVD.

I assume they still read their emails? Might be a good idea to wait until you know if the tapes actually exist or not. Too much publicity has affected Doctor Who episode recoveries in the past. One episode got stolen from the Nigerian tv station it was found in before it could be shipped back to the BBC!

If this is legit wow! It's really amazing to think that somebody actually has had these episodes all these years and apparently even watched them at some point! How many episodes does he have? It would always be good to get as many first gen copies of all of the KTMA episodes as possible. We're still missing the credits from K15.
