I am currently captioning 302 Gamera and was wondering if anyone can check a broadcast version to see if it is cut? I looked for a broadcast version on YouTube but no dice. The scene in question is at the 58 minute mark. Kenny's sister finishes talking to him while he "sleeps" and Joel says: "Good riddance." It then abruptly cuts... you can see the silhouette change positions from the cut. It doesn't look like a cut between commercials. Vid wouldn't embed... here's a link to the clip: www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=m0eacG7XfwcThanks to anyone who checks on it!

It's a commercial break. There are one/two instances (it's inconsistent until later) in the early episodes where the commercial break is just a fade to black without an interstitial. That's one of them, but it looks like Shout edited out the two or so seconds of blank screen and the fade. It's also possible that there is supposed to be an interstitial there, but it's missing.

Thanks, DK.
The transcript I have for it has a line after "Good riddance"... "Your passing is soon." I wonder if that's in the broadcast version?

I just checked a different source on Club MST3K, it is briefly cut as it fades for the blank commercial cut. Club MST3K Link

I noticed the edits as well with Shout's DVD when it was first released.
Also note the next to last host segment where Mike is playing Gamera talking to Godzilla on the phone. The old broadcast version I have includes Godzilla sound effects coming from the phone which aren't in the Shout DVD.

Bloody hell! And I just gave my off air copy to a friend recently. I thought this sort of nonsense was a relic of the Rhino era.

No unfortunately several Shout Factory DVDs have problems. Mostly with video and sound glitches from their tape transfers that they never bothered to try to fix. Just like Rhino.
Worst offender of the SF DVDs is probably episode 208 Lost Continent with some really bad glitches throughout the episode.
Due to this I've been forced to keep my old fan DVD episodes along with the retail releases that have problems.

I've kept multiple backups of my S-VHS recording of 208 for that very reason. Ironically, it was one of the more difficult tapes for me to transfer to DVD as there was a pesky tape dropout that kept moving around before finally flaking off. The quality of tape stock in the 90's really took a nose dive at some point. I'd gladly offer my copy to Shout for a Dr. Who level restoration of 208 if they were willing to do such a thing.
I'm sure my friend will happily copy the disc I sent them. I'm going to end up the video version of a hoarder someday, I just know it!
Why would they remove the Godzilla sound effect from the Mike as Gamera skit? Is Toho that lawsuit happy? The big G is still in the opening of the show.

I think whatever tape Shout got for Gamera from Joel or Jim Mallon wasn't the final broadcast version.
Not using broadcast tapes is a frequent problem with SF (and Rhino before them). In particular with old cartoon series like Transformers and G.I. Joe. To this day fans of those series still don't have broadcast-accurate versions of many of those shows on DVD.

Throughout the entire run (IIRC), the midway point commercial break was without an interstitial. It was the reel change, as the broadcast masters were two tapes per episode

Obviously I can't account for Godzilla's inclusion in the credits, but I do know that Pixar wanted to use Godzilla's roar in Monster's Inc., but they weren't granted permission by Toho. This is from the director's commentary on the DVD release.

I have a copy of Gamera on tape, but I never really compared and contrasted with the Shout DVD. Knowing Toho though, that doesn't even surprise me anymore.
