I'm actually glad we're only getting 6 episodes for season 12. If it means they'll have more time for writing and shooting the episodes, I'm all for it! It's less risk on NetFlix's part too, so getting a season 13 might be easier as a result. The "long-time requested" film has me very excited! Could it be THE GIANT CLAW, THE GREEN SLIME, or KILLDOZER? I'd imagine they're going to steer clear of titles RiffTrax has done (Which is a shame, because I really want to see them riff STARSHIP INVASIONS, NIGHT OF THE LEPUS and PLANET OF DINOSAURS). As for the "within the last 5 years" I'm at a loss... I don't keep up with modern bad movies. They could just do all 3 of those...that would be Awesome Sauce...
As for the "Film from the last 5 years"
Winter's Tale...

Another way of looking at this:
Joel says one of the pics will be a movie made in the last five years. If this was a major studio film (as opposed to something of the Sharknado variety), then perhaps a considerable amount of the MST3K twelfth season budget went to acquiring the rights to this particular film -- which meant they only had enough money left over to make six episodes.
Nahhh... I'm probably way off base there -- but it's fun to speculate.

It's Solo: A Star Wars Story because Disney will take whatever money they can get for it by now.

It might not be PC enough with all the "Robosexual" references...
Seriously...why did they do that to Lando?

Honestly as much as I would like there to be more episodes to s12 I can understand why they wish to shorten this season & I'm still excited! I'm not really set on my opinion for this till s12 is released but so far I still feel pretty positive about it,guess I'll just have to wait & see! Now on the pledge drive,I don't really have an opinion on that cause I don't really pledge too often (as much as I wish I could!) but it seems quiet neat from what I read

Jonah posted that today was the last day of shooting, so just 5 days of filming (Not sure if Theater Stuff is done at another time).
He also posted a pic of Baron after filming, so he’s definitely back as Tom.

Oh good, and I was worried that they would use their shortened season to, you know, spend an appropriate amount of time shooting the host segments. But 5 days for 6 episodes. That's... better than 5 days for 14 episodes, I guess.
Hopefully everything isn't as terribly rushed as it was the last time.

I just hope they picked some good films...
As much as the "host segments" can add fun & energy... its the films & riffing that should be the focus.

As awesome as that sauce would be, and as much as I'd love to seem them Msted, you can bet they won't riff Planet of the Dinosaurs, Starship Invasions, The Giant Claw or the beloved Killdozer since they're fullscreen not widescreen. And cropping a fullscreen picture into a faux widescreen is as bad (or worse) as doing a pan-and-scan of a cinemascope flick. But The Green Slime?! Night of the Lepus?! Bring 'em on, Joel!!!

I'd enjoy seeing the original Gor.

I'd be down for the original Gor. NEver watched it, but always looked at it with intrigue at the video rental place. You know, back when I frequented such places. ...when they existed.
I kid, I kid, there's, like, four family videos within fifty miles of me, video rental is still a thing. Just... drive fifty miles for it.
As for the season length: Netflix has been doing this to a lot of shows, and I think I'm partly okay with it. Fewer episodes sorta means there's a bigger bang on Netflix's side to see a return on what they're producing, but it also means that there's potentially less time between seasons.
And for the people producing the show, it means that they have more chances to get "premieres." Where before, people on a show would get lots of small premieres during a season, now streaming-only shows mostly just get one big premiere and then it's done. A premiere for six episodes is balancing a lot of problems together to arrive at some reasonable solutions, I think.
Sure, I'd prefer more episodes. Twenty-two a season feels good to me. But I can work with this.

According to IMDB, The Giant Claw was shot in 1.85 to 1 ratio, which definitely counts as widescreen.
(Of course, the IMDB has been wrong before.)

Nearly every Hollywood movie after 1953 was composed for or shot in some sort of widescreen process. Claw would have been shot in 1.37:1 but matted in theaters to 1.85:1, which I believe is the ratio used on the DVD release from several years back. Sony should have an HD master too since I believe it was released on Blu-Ray somewhere in Europe.

Can we get a Blu-Ray release of The Giant Claw in Australia please?

While my only subjections to Planet of Dinosaurs was a worn down VHS tape when I was a kid and the Rifftrax version, one thing I note about the Rifftrax version is that the image is vertically stretched, which always gave me the impression that it originated as a 1.85:1 print. In fact I usually put my TV into stretch mode when I watch it because stretching is a pet peeve of mine. The image looks natural in widescreen.
I don't know if all versions are like this, but my gut tells me widescreen versions of that film also exist.
