My mother, sister and I always go on these long weekend vacations, usually the weekend after Labor Day - still warm, but off peak. We like to go to cute little, scenic towns - preferably on the water - with walkable main streets with cute little shops to browse (NOT outlets) and nice restaurants, art galleries and the like. We're running out of ideas on where to go that isn't TOO far of a drive (no flying) to get to so we're not spending the whole first day travelling.
We've been to Cape May, NJ (kind of far from where we are, but we went for a few more days than normal); Ogunquit, ME, and Kennebunkport; a few towns in Cape Cod; Rockport, MA with side trips to Gloucester and Salem; Newport, RI.
Does anyone out there in MST3K land know of anywhere in the NY, New England area that's quaint and, well, New Englandy? I'm from CT, so I don't want to go anywhere in my home state (that's not really "AWAY"). Looking online doesn't really help, and I know some of the best places are out of the way, "secret" places.
Has anyone in that general vicinity ever found some little gem of a town that would be nice to go to for a few days?

Thanks, I'll look into that. I saw a cute hotel on a lake in nearby Lee, so that might be something worth looking into. So we'd be able to check out both cities. I also saw something online for Camden, ME. Looks gorgeous. I don't know how long my sister wants to drive . She always likes to do the driving. Stockbridge shouldn't be too far.

We ended up going to Cape Cod again. This time we stayed in Falmouth. We took the ferry to Martha's Vineyard, had never been there. The weather wasn't TOO bad, but it wasn't as warm as it usually is when we're away. It didn't rain, so we lucked out there, but it was cloudy and cool. Good walking around weather (much better than walking around in 90+ degree heat), but no beach days. We went for a shorter time than usual - my sister has had numerous long weekends this year with her husband, so didn't want to get too carried away being away from work and spending too much money.
It was kind of boring because where we were didn't really have a night life, my sister didn't want to drive too far at night looking for places with live music (the bands usually start at 9:00 or 10:00 pm, which, I think, is ridiculous, especially on a Sunday night - people have to work the next day, so that's kind of crazy). I mean, how many times can you eat or have a few drinks? (And I don't drink, so being with my sis and mom drinking is kind of annoying, heh). We stayed for a while at a couple of restaurants to catch a few songs from one group and one singer, but they weren't the greatest.
Nice, but, I don't think I'd go back. Maybe I would've liked to see more of Martha's Vineyard if I had been on my own. We didn't really see the natural sights too much.
Think I'll try Stockbridge next year. At least at the hotel on the lake, my sister and I could've gone kayaking.
Well, wasn't that exciting?

We ended up going to New Hampshire the following year. Those are our old haunts - growing up as kids we would go to Lake Winnipesaukee and stay at cabins a short hike from the lake, the cabins had their own beach but it was a trot down a dirt road. We always stayed the same week as the same people every year so it was fun to stay with families we knew. It was my mom and dad and sister and I, and my aunt and uncle and cousins would go the same week, and quite a few families we would see every year. In 2019, it was just my mom, sis and I and we sure didn't stay at a cabin - too much work. We stayed at a hotel that had a restaurant on the same property with a pub that had live music, so that was nice. It was quite a drive to the parts of the state that we visited in my younger days, but then, everything's quite a hike in New Hampshire. We visited some of the places we went to when we were young. Weir's Beach which is in Meredith, I believe, but it's near Laconia. My favorite restaurant ever - Hart's Turkey Farm in Meredith - which, to my tastes, is the only restaurant that does turkey right. (It's fresh roasted, REAL turkey, and doesn't taste like that cheap turkey "loaf" that most restaurants seem to do). We went to Fun Spot in Meredith which has miniature golf and a big arcade. Kellerhaus in Meredith which is a gift shop and a place where you can make your own sundaes. And Ye Olde Country Store in Moultonborough, heh, same stuff as always and penny candy (which, of course, is far from a penny these days). We went down the Kancamagus Highway, very scenic, beautiful country up there. We reminisced and went down the road to our old cabins. It's private property now, the people who used to own the place passed away a long time ago. My aunt and uncle are no longer with us and the parents of one of the families we knew have since passed and also some other people who the owners of the cabins knew whom we used to visit have all gone. It's sad when life passes by like that. Last year we ended up going to Cape Cod yet AGAIN. This time we stayed in South Yarmouth. Just chillin' mostly. It was pandemic time, so we didn't do much of going in stores and the like. Got take-out at a great Jamaican restaurant, though, it was delish. Today we're headed back to Cape May, NJ. I'm hoping we take the ferry to Lewes, Delaware, one day, but I don't know about the waters with all the hurricanes going on, might be quite rough. Anyone else have nice vacation stories or places they like to go?

We did go to Lewes, DE on the ferry. Cute little town. There's a live webcam at the end of the street from the hotel we stayed at in Cape May. I should've picked a time and told everyone (who cared to, heh) to look it up and I would've went down there and waved to everyone. Saw some dolphins offshore when we were lolling on the beach. Saw the fins and one jumped out of the water doing a little twist. Here's the shadow of a laughing gull on the top of my umbrella at the beach. Here's one on the umbrella next to me. Here's some cormorants and pelicans on a sunken ship at Sunset Beach.

Here's a pic of Lake George from the hotel we stayed at. We took side trips - one to the nearby town of Bolton Landing (another cute town) and one to Lake Placid. Saw the ski jump they used for the Olympics in 1980 and went up on the gondola. No effing way would I want to make that jump. Beautiful scenery of the surrounding mountains, though, and the town is cute, looks kind of like a little Swiss town. Went through Saratoga Springs on the way home, but it was raining, so we didn't do much walking around. Nice trip overall.

This year it'll be Ocean City, Maryland. Never been to Maryland. Was in D.C. YEAaarrRRRSSSss ago - it was a school trip. It's kind of a long drive, but my sister wants to see the wild ponies they have on an island down there.
Anyone ever been? Any suggestions on what to do?

We actually ended up going to Ogunquit, ME again instead of Maryland. My sister didn't want to drive through the traffic, it would've been too long. Someone had told her it took them 8 HOURS driving that way, having to go through the traffic, esp. through NY.

I can understand that. Traffic is no bueno, especially in big cities.

It's that time of year again when we have to hurry up and decide where to go before everything is booked up. So many things are so much more expensive. I think the problem is, it stays so hot now into the fall, that hotels are considering it still peak season in September and capitalizing on it. Bummer.
Cape May is so expensive now at the hotel we usually stay at. And others we've looked into.
We're thinking maybe New Hope, PA. Someone told my sister that it was cute and it's on top 20 (or however many) lists online of cute towns to visit. Has anyone ever been there? Is there anything to do or see?

I'm not familiar with it myself, but it sounds like a good place to check out. Any other good towns on that kinda list to keep in mind in case I ever get a chance to go a-wanderin'?

I don't remember what the list was called. I think it was on Pinterest and it was "Cutest Towns in Each State" or something like that. There's a bunch of different lists on Pinterest like that. Top towns in New England, Top towns on the East Coast, or something like that.
Edit: I think the original articles came from "onlyinyourstate.com" or something like that. I might still have it saved. I'll look on my Pinterest things.
Yeah, it was onlyinyourstate.com
