The BBFC released its listing for the new Season: The Gauntlet. 5 of the 6 episodes are listed. 1201-MAC AND ME, 81m 47s 1202-ATLANTIC RIM, 80m 15s 1203-LORDS OF THE DEEP, 78m 48s 1204-THE DAY TIME ENDED, 82m 28s 1205-? 1206-ATOR, 82m 51s Two things stick out to me: 1. The episodes are SHORT. An average of 10 minutes shorter than a classic episode. Shorter than last seasons', even. 2. 1202-Atlantic Rim is an Asylum movie from 2013. A "mockbuster". Asylum makes bad movies on purpose. This pick is baffling and frankly counter to the purpose of the show. Bad movies should be sincere, otherwise they're comedies, which don't work well for riffing (See: Wizards of the Lost Kingdom 2) Thoughts?

Definitely a bit disheartened by there being an Asylum movie this season. It could still be a really funny episode, but I agree that its not the kind of movie I really want on MST3K. When I watch MST, I want sincerely bad, or "they just didn't care," not bad on purpose, and incredibly few films by the Asylum are anywhere close to meeting those criteria. I thought, if it lives on long enough, then yeah they'll probably start doing some of those, but I really didn't expect it to be so soon! (EDIT: Also, if they were gonna do an Asylum film, Atlantic Rim isn't even the one I'd pick. I'd have way more fun watching them riff on the guy kicking fish in MegaPiranha.) I'm also disappointed by the shorter episode lengths. Otherwise everything else sounds good, glad Mac and Me is confirmed and the rest sound like good choices for the show, and I'm still very excited for the new season, but yeah those two things are really, reeeally bumming me out right now.

THE DAY TIME ENDED is an exciting choice, as I'm a fan of the Full Moon/Empire Pictures crap and this will be a nice follow-up to the classic Laserblast!
I met producer Charles Band at an event a while ago and bought some of his DVDs, they had a mystery DVD deal so I went for it and I got THE DAY TIME ENDED.

Now that we know Atlantic Rim, a film involving giant fighting robots, is one of the movies for the new season, who else wants to bet its the episode that this segment will be in?

Am I missing something about the Atlantic Rim choice? I haven't seen it, but I was expecting it to be a lame tongue-in-cheek spoof of Pacific Rim with cameos by Jenny McCarthy and Jared from Subway, but the trailer looks like a straight rip-off of Pacific Rim. A low-budget and brazen rip-off, sure (such a tactic was a staple of Roger Corman movies)...but at least the trailer was selling it like a sincere action movie. I would be against doing something already mocking action movies (a'la Sharknado), but I don't see the problem with this one at least based on the trailer.
The other choices are solid, and I'm kinda glad there's still at least one surprise title yet to be uncovered.

Atlantic Rim maybe isn't quite as jokey as a lot of their films (memory is a bit fuzzy since I only watched it once, when it first came out), and probably required less editing for content than a lot of them, and you're right that its not as bad as if they were doing one of the Sharknado movies. Its just that Asylum films, including Atlantic Rim, are made intentionally bad and cheesy, which takes some of the fun out of it. It's like insulting a comedy for not being serious... and again, if they have to do an Asylum movie, Mega Piranha is the one I'd probably prefer most. I don't know why I have such a soft spot for that one, I just do.

Agree however that the truncated runtimes are disappointing. I bet Netflix's research probably indicated that attention spans are shorter now than they were in the pre-Internet days of the original show and concluded a snappier show would attract more new/younger fans. I'm not a fan of cutting these movies to ribbons, but then I guess if it creates a larger fanbase of MSTies maybe that's a positive thing. As long as those 80 minutes are funny, I'm good.

I'm assuming at least one of the reasons for the shorter runtimes is an attempt to make the shower easier to binge-watch, as Netflix tends to prefer their original programs be watched in that manner. And yeah, I agree, as long as its funny I'll be happy. It's just a teeny tiny bit heartbreaking knowing this year we'll see less than half as many episodes as last year, and they're shorter too.

Regarding the length of the episodes, I have a few friends who are not that big of fans of the original series that really loved the recent season. They told me that what they liked about The Return over the original run was that it had a faster pace and the references were more relatable to them (roughly a 1000% increase in video game references). And though they didn't say as much, I'm sure the fact that most of the movies featured in season 11 were much better than what they showed on the original series probably helped. I was concerned that they would be showing Sharknado, but it looks like most of these titles fit right in with things you'd expect to see on MST3K. That Corman comparison to Asylum is pretty spot on.

Am I mistaken, or did Joel say we were going to get at least one B&W movie this season? I guess that could be the mystery movie, but maybe I'm totally dreaming about the B&W thing.

I don't think he ever confirmed it. I want to say that that was something they were considering before they were officially renewed.

If you're mistaken then so am I, because now I'm remember reading that somewhere too, quite possibly on this message board.

Everyone is zeroing in on Atlantic Rim, of which I haven't seen and don't give a poopie about. I don't know how tongue in cheek itis (though not all Asylum films are tongue in cheek. I've seen several that are hilariously dead serious).
No, the title that jumped out at me was Ator. Is this the first Ator or maybe the third or fourth? Rifftrax riffed the original a few years back. Just find it interesting that they offered up another reriff of a Rifftrax title for the second year in a row.
As for the episode length, as long as it's funny I don't care.

I don't mind so much if Rifftrax already did the Ator movie. The one from last season that RT had already done was "Wizards of the Lost Kingdom 1", and that turned out to be my favorite of the season. (Granted, I still have not seen the RT version...nor have I seen their take on the original Ator.)

(Granted, I still have not seen the RT version...nor have I seen their take on the original Ator.) My issue is more that I prefer seeing movies that haven't been riffed before. I've had that preference all the way back to Cinematic Titanic (and I assume if I were a fan during season three I'd have grumbled about seeing the Sandy Frank films a second time). Wizards at least had the virtue of the Rifftrax version being pulled after a few days, so I hadn't seen that one. The Rifftrax version of Ator however is pretty good. It's no Cave Dwellers, but I'm not chomping at the bit for an alternative riff of it. And in an abbreviated season, seeing a movie that has been "done" before kinda stings. If we got another fourteen episode season I might have shrugged though. On the subject of Asylum, the whole Sharknado cheekiness was just a reaction to them riding on something that accidentally got "popular." The first Sharknado is kinda not serious but it was done serious enough for a riff to work. It wasn't until the sequels did we find them getting more self aware and goofy. I don't know if Atlantic Rim is of that make, but if it is then it will probably be fine. Though if I were to throw a title out there that probably has a great riff in it then it would be Paranormal Entity. I'm no huge Paranormal Activity fan but that movie suddenly seemed a masterpiece in comparison to its "blockbuster." Yeesh.
