Can't believe they're still doing it like this. Can you imagine The Muppets being performed this way?

The shorter times are bad news. My big fear is part of the "binge-watching" "stream-lining" is that they're actually going to cut whole host segments, as in there won't be cold-open, intro, 3 mid-movie, and outro anymore. That would be really sad. I don't think we'll have to worry about the opening or skits, you're reaching a bit far to get that fear.
Hmmm, or [very sadly], I was exactly right. I watched the first new ep. I hated it. That movie was obnoxious, not funny-riffable. But more importantly, they've ruined the format, haven't they. Not only did they cut a host segment (and the bumpers!), they turned the opening and closing segments into nothing more than an introduction/commercial for the rest of the season. WTF! I don't want to know 'what you're going to do this season'. Just show it. I will tune in to each episode (maybe not even in order) and they will tell me what movie they're watching and then watch/riff it. Do they do this through the whole season? MST3K is not a damn binge-watching show. It is a show-by-show, we picked (got forced) a movie to watch, here it is, here's some fun jokes and skits around it kind of thing. There is no order to MST3K. Total crap. I might be done with the 'New MST3K' after all this.

Not to get all philosophical, but isn't saying that "a thing should be a certain way," by definition imposing an order on it?

MST3K is not a damn binge-watching show. . That Turkey Day thing that has been a big part of it over the decades and is one of the more important dates in its history says otherwise

That Turkey Day thing that has been a big part of it over the decades and is one of the more important dates in its history says otherwise That's so clever how you've completely proven my point. MST3K has made a tradition of taking MULTIPLE RANDOM EPISODES from DIFFERENT SEASONS EVEN and showing them back to back on Thanksgiving with some special for that occasion, not tied to the actual eps, bumpers. It's not a binge watch, it's a marathon. They've been doing them for decades, and one of the main parts of a marathon is that you don't have to watch it from beginning to end, you can jump in and out any time you want. The eps can be in any order, can jump from host to host, whatever. There is one exception, and it's the TDay version of Night of the Blood Beast, which actually has a set of host segments that are within the ep. And that STILL is a single self contained ep.

How are the Gauntlet host segments any different from the Sci-Fi storyline segments, other than the fact that they're actually easier to jump into when viewed out of sequence?

I don't know, I haven't watched any but the first ep. On that first ep, the (ONLY) two in the middle were just fine. But the intro and ending were awful, not even sketches, but lame promotion of the rest of the season, as I said two posts ago.
