THIS is a good movie selection!
Great riffs right put of the gate.
Edit 1: I left the closed captioning on, there's another riff that wasn't added in ADR at 22:45 by Jonah about raiding a bris. Wonder what the hell happened with all of these lines that weren't looped in? Kind of surprised, this season seemed a lot more polished.
Edit 2: Well, its over. It was a good episode. Not the best of the season, but in the top half.
What to make of that ending? Why do the tour bit as the ending of the show...when they already went on tour before the season came out? And the bit with the Mads going into their own theater was cute, showed some depth to Moon 13, though it ultimately went nowhere.
The way they framed the songs over the credits, it made it out to have a lot more "finality" than last season. Makes me wonder if we'll get a Season 13.
B+
As far as the season on the whole, well, it was better than last season, that's for damn sure. It could've stood to be longer. Another 2 episodes would've been ideal.
The riffing pace is 100% better, and the fact that they're riffing at the same time, even if it's still pre-recorded, helps a lot. The riffing itself is still pretty thin, substance-wise. Lots of repetition, fart jokes and "easy" pop culture references (like Star Wars), and they still over-explain riffs occasionally. But they're starting to learn how to write riffs properly, the run-on joke riffs from last season are nearly gone. The riffers themselves sound more natural. Hampton was a natural from the beginning, but Jonah finally sounds comfortable. And I WASN'T horribly annoyed by Baron's Servo this season, he toned it WAY down. Though his Servo voice is still totally nondescript and blends into the background.
About 90% of the sketches are actual, fleshed-out ideas! With camera movement! The SOL set is still drab and boring, but at least we get to pan around a little on it.
Overall, it was good. Serviceable. More even than last season. None of the episodes really approached anywhere near the highs of Avalanche or Beast of Hollow Mountain, but they also didn't reach quite the lowest lows of Loves of Hercules, Christmas That Almost Wasn't or Wizards 2. The biggest thing holding it back is still the quality of riffing. It simply isn't very high-brow anymore. Like, they have the same number of jokes an episode should have, but there's not as much ground covered. They say the same stuff, a lot. And it's usually pretty pedestrian. I feel like they need a Frank or Trace or Kevin on their writing staff who can really get esoteric and not be afraid to confuse an audience. As it is, it still feels very vapid.

This was a good episode. The first 20 minutes or so is like a blitzkrieg of hilarious riffs, and while the beginning may be the funniest, the riffing stays fairly consistent throughout.
Overall, I thought the season was good. The guys felt more relaxed and confident both in the theater and during the host segments. There wasn't anything quite on the level of Wizards of the Lost Kingdom (my personal fave from last season), but the episode quality felt more consistent overall. Mac and Me is my personal favorite from this season. I'm sure it would have been even funnier had I not already been familiar with the movie and its insane ending.
Here's to hoping for a next season and continuing improvements!

Okay, as much as I bitched about the last slot being used on a movie that was already on Rifftrax, I'm glad they did it. I think this episode was definitely a step up from Rifftrax's, though admittedly I haven't seen it since it came out. Also this might be my favorite of the new season, at least it is in an intense war with Mac and Me. We'll see how things stack up once I start blogging these.
Ending cliffhanger was gold. Maybe when Season 13 is produced we'll get to see Kinga and Max in the theater? I sure hope so! While I don't think there was a genuine grand slam such as Avalanche or Wizards of the Lost Kingdom this season, I did get some good ones added to the legacy of the series and I really hope to see more with this cast. Jonah, Baron, and Hampton are the real deal!
Until then, this is Torgo signing off, and getting some well deserved shut-eye.

Might as well toss in my final thoughts on the final ep...
The finale gets the show back on point. Especially the first half - Lots of big laughs here. The response to the line about the seven Siamese sisters… “Very difficult delivery.” had me in stitches. Also liked the sibling quips. (Blonde enters scene, “Hey um, you looking for a brother?”)
But there are still some goodies in the final reel. I like the line about the female warrior having to do everything Ator does, but backwards and in high heels… this was something said about Ginger Rogers, and I'm a Ginger Rogers fan.
I’ve lost interest in Rifftrax and didn’t know they covered this. So no biggie for me. MST’s the one who should do this movie anyway.
So that's it, and I still have much of the month to go before I cancel the service. There are several movies I want to watch and I found this other Netflix series, Maniac, with Emma Stone and Jonah Hill. Which has been great so far.
Till -maybe- season 13, where we’ll hopefully see Max and Kinga riff.
Later gators.

Great episode! And a very good ending to the season. A goofy movie with lots of goofy riffing, just how I like it. Cave Dwellers is one my top fave from the classic era too, and I always wanted to see the "prequel" get the MST treatment it deserved. I had also seen the RiffTrax take on this a couple years ago, but I think I prefer this version, it just feels more at home on MST.
As for the season overall, I agree it's a noticeable improvement in a number of aspects. The better pacing of the riffing is a big plus, and I can tell the new cast are really settling into their roles more comfortably. A couple more episodes would've nice, but they still did a really good job with what they had. Short, but sweet.
Her's hoping we get a season 13 soon enough!

Well, I finished up 2018 and the Gauntlet. Haven't read the other reviews yet.
I thought this first Ator movie (were there only two of them?) was...not all that great. I mean, even if I hadn't seen "Cave Dwellers", I'd have figured that the Dizzy-like warrior girl was doomed, and that the temptress would be revealed as demonically ugly. Ator's sister/girlfriend was far too passive, and I was creeped out by the villain and the spiders. I also couldn't help but notice that the print they used was not in great shape. It's a close call, but I almost think "Cave Dwellers" was better than this one, and "Cave Dwellers" was lousy. Oh, by the way, does anybody know what happened to the bear? I thought the riffing was great (and I don't have the RT version, so I can't compare them). The host segments were good, with a welcome return by Dr. St. Phibes and Larry. As for the ending, I really want to find out how this turns out. I hope they get the OK for Season 13 soon, if only to see whether there's more to "Idiot Control Now" than just funeral music, and just how they'll get everybody back to where they need to be. I do have a bit of a question. I was reading the TV Tropes entry on this one, and it brings up the notion that while Jonah and the 'bots returned to Earth, they'll be emotionally scarred for keeps by their movie torture by Kinga & Max, as hinted in the closing song. I don't get that, actually. Joel escaped, and later called his tenure on the S.O.L. "the best damn years of my life". Mike got back home, and he seemed remarkably pleasant, with no angst at all. I have to figure Jonah's strong enough to let it all slide and be happy...until the next round of movies. What do you think, sirs?
Anyway, I thought it turned out generally OK. And the Gauntlet itself turned out fine. Now I just have to wait for Lucky 13 and, I hope, Live Tour 2019.

Ator was an average episode when comparing it to a classic like Cave Dwellers.

There are actually four Ator movies. I wonder if the other two are as riffable.

There's only one left with Miles O'Keffe called Iron Warrior, and apparently it didn't live up to the "standards" of the first two and it was retconned. Then the director of the first two made a Son of Ator movie as the final film, Quest for the Mighty Sword.

Ator was definitely my favorite of season 12. There wasn't too many dumb gimmicks with it, like Servo flying around the screen or random in theater musical numbers. It was just a fun episode and it also helps that the movie is so weird. I think once I get to rewatching some MST3K episodes, this and The Day Time Ended will be the ones from season 12 I'll go back to the most.
