Who was better between Mike and Joel has been done to death, so I got to thinking: Who had to watch the worse movies? Bad movies are what the show is all about, after all.
Joel had to sit through Castle of Fu Manchu, Manos, Eegah, and Monster A Go-Go. All some of the worst movies ever made. But Mike had to endure the Coleman Francis trilogy (Skydivers, Beast of Yucca Flats and Red Zone Cuba), Invasion of the Neptune Men, and Creeping Terror.

Don't forget Hamlet. Ugh. I think it's a draw. And I'll add Jonah to that list, also. The Christmas That Almost Wasn't, anyone?
Some movies were fun through all seasons on their own, but they all had to endure some mind-numbing schlock, let's be honest.

Christmas That Almost Wasn't is bad, but it's not as bad as say, Incredibly Strange Creatures.

I've always maintained that "Incredibly Strange Creatures..." and "Invasion of the Neptune Men" were the two worst pieces of trash ever featured on MST3K, so yeah I'd say Mike had it rough.
I think the only two majorly bad films from the Joel-era would probably be "Castle of Fu Manchu" (largely for Christopher Lee wearing Asian make-up, thus making most of the film uncomfortable to watch), and the short "Catching Trouble" for blatant on-screen animal cruelty.

Personally I've always said that anybody who can't sit through Invasion of the Neptune Men is a lightweight. That movie is a breeze and is nowhere near any top ten list of worst movies featured on the show that I might put together myself.
And yes, I'm calling Mike and the Bots a bunch of pansies for wussing out on it in the theater.
My observation has been that probably the worst movies seen during the show's run tended to come from the Joel era, but Mike's movies just might have averaged out to be worse. A lot of Joel's output usually stayed in a comfortably cheesy place and they just played up how awful what they were watching actually was. I always shake my head at that poor little naive Tom Servo who called Cave Dwellers or Manhunt in Space the worst movies they've ever watched and think to myself that he has no idea how good he has it. Occasionally they'd tap into the Z grade stuff and when they did they usually picked something aggressively bad, but they didn't do it that often. Mike's episodes tapped those movies far more often but while he piled up some really bad ones, they weren't quite as memorably awful as the ones Joel put up with.

Red Zone Cuba is one of the most miserable movies they sat through, so I have to give a slight edge to Mike.

Joel did a movie that structurally reminded me of Incredibly Strange Creatures that really doesn't seem obvious at first, and it's odd how often it's left off lists of the worst films they did. I'm talking about Fire Maidens From Outer Space. Both it and Incredibly Strange Creatures were about 15 minutes of story stretched out to fit a ~75 minute run time. It's extraordinary how much padding each film has. And they were both pretty sleazy for the times they each were made. There are similarities that these two films share that they didn't share with any of the other films that MST3k did. In both films, it's the extreme padding that distinguishes them as bad. Sure, they're both bad anyway, but they don't achieve distinction as truly awful films without their padding. Their similarities are what make these two movies two of the worst the Brains did.

I think people tend to forget about Fire Maidens From Outer Space because it's never been commercially available. Sure there are hard core fans who watched it on Comedy Central, tape traded for it, or more recently caught it on YouTube. However I think commercial availability really helps an episode's overall reputation because more people have opportunities to talk about it.

"Fire Maidens from Outer Space" at least has some cute dancers. "Creatures" has dancers, sure, but they ain't cute.
