For those who were around during the Mike vs. Joel wars back in the early days of the internet, what was it like? I heard it got pretty nasty, to the point where the topic had to be banned altogether.

I was in kindergarten, heading into 1st grade, when all that was going down, so I definitely wasn't around to experience any kind of "Joel Vs. Mike" flame wars.
But, I've experienced those sorts of things with other shows when actors get switched out, or hosts change. Like, with CSI, I have vague memories of there being disagreements among fans over whether Laurence Fishburn was a suitable replacement for William Peterson. Even people going as far as saying that Fishburn caused the show's quality to drop down (even though I personally think the show started sucked a couple year's before Peterson left, but that's just me). I think there were some fights among fans, but I don't think it got overtly heated.

Not to look at the past through rose tinted glasses, but online discourse has devolved to a point where what would have once been called a "flame war" is now just standard behavior. The ugliest Joel versus Mike argument that ever went down was probably 10% as bad as a run of the mill Youtube comment section. In the days of news groups and message boards, there was a sense of community that made even minor scuffles seem like a big deal. Now we just anonymously tweet bile at each other, so there's no center of gravity to depart from that would qualify something as drama.
If you were to go spelunking the archives of rec.arts.tv.mst3k.misc and find actual Joel vs. Mike debates, you might be shocked at how quaint they come off.
