I thought I would try out this whole review thing by doing some season reviews. I mean, I'm already working on a bunch of video game reviews but shut up. Anyway, to keep things interesting, I'm only going to be reviewing each episode in about one or two sentences. That way, my reviews hopefully won't be too boring to read or clog up this thread. I'll also give each episode a number rating out of 10. 1 is the worst, 10 is the best, and 5 is average. I'm going to review season 1 first. I'm not planning on reviewing seasons in any particular order, but I still have season 1 somewhat fresh in my mind. So, I'm doing season 1 first. I don't know how frequently I will update this thread, but I'll try to make sure that it won't die out. Anyway, here's my short reviews of every season 1 episode!
101 The Crawling Eye - This episode was pretty decent for the show's first ever national episode. The movie is a pretty interesting and weird sci-fi romp and this episode does feature some memorable riffs. 6/10
102 The Robot Vs. The Aztec Mummy - This episode is not as bad as people say it is. However, the riffing is not very good, the movie only has a few funny moments, and the demon dog sketches are mostly forgettable. 5/10
103 The Mad Monster - While a step up from episode 102, the slow and ugly movie really hurts this episode. However, this does have some of the best host segments of the first season. 5/10
104 Women of the Prehistoric Planet - The movie is colorful and silly, but the riffing and host segments are mostly uninspired and I think it should have been much better for the last episode produced. 5/10
105 The Corpse Vanishes - Featuring a pretty decent horror film, consistently good riffs, and some nice host segments, this is my pick for the season's second best episode. 7/10
106 The Crawling Hand - There are some cute host segments in this one, but the rest of this episode is pretty unremarkable. 5/10
107 Robot Monster - The absolutely ridiculous movie helps this episode a lot. However, the riffing is pretty average like most other season 1 episodes. 6/10
108 The Slime People - This is my least favorite season 1 episode. It doesn't help that the movie is so hard to see, but none of the riffing or host segments really got any reaction out of me. 5/10
109 Project Moon Base - Looking past the sexism, this movie is pretty boring. However, some decent riffing and the classic Spacom segment help save this episode from being average. 6/10
110 Robot Holocaust - The movie is perfectly cheesy, but the riffing never uses the film to its fullest advantage. However, I did like Joel's chill conversation with the bots over the end credits. 6/10
111 Moon Zero Two - This is my favorite season 1 episode by far! The only things wrong with it are the somewhat weak host segments and that the riffing in the second half is not as good as the first half. 7/10
112 Untamed Youth - I absolutely hated the movie and the riffing was not that great. Even with a couple good host segments, this one was very disappointing for me. 5/10
113 The Black Scorpion - This was a nice end to the season. The riffing was pretty decent, and the movie was interesting just for the stop motion scenes. 6/10
Average episode rating - 5.69
All in all, season 1 is nowhere near as bad as many people think it is. It's not a great season, but it was massively important to the development of the show and there were some highlights in this season. I would suggest watching all of these episodes at least once. However, if you want to see just the best of season 1, I would recommend Moon Zero Two and The Corpse Vanishes.
Also, here's a little something extra. Since I love making lists and charts, I decided to make a spreadsheet dedicated to MST3K and putting episodes into different categories. I also have all of the episodes I've watched on there, as well as my rankings for the seasons I have finished watching and a bunch of other categories. So, check it out if you're interested. I put a lot of work into it and I'm still not entirely finished with it. However, I hope that you guys will enjoy looking through it. Anyway, I'm done typing for now. Hopefully, I didn't waste your time.
