Hi all! New to the forum, so hope it's ok that I post this here :
My fiancee is pregnant with our first child. I'm a huge fan of the show, my fiancee also enjoys it.
My favorite character is Servo, especially the Creepy Girl song haha
We're talking about baby names.
I want it to be something different and unique, with some personality.
I want to name it Servo
What do you think?

Just be sure you also consider how the kid might feel about the name in 10, 15, 20 years. They are the ones who have to live with it after all.

Is it really that embarrassing of a name though? These days people give their kids some pretty obscure, random names. Kyler for example. Sounds pretty random to me. It's a couple of random sounds put together. Same thing with Ryland I saw Declan, Weston, Bentley, Aiden and Grayson all listed in an article of top baby boy names for 2019. These are all just random sounds put together that are 2 syllables. How are they better names than Servo?

Yeah, Thomas. "Thomas Servo" might be acceptable too (first and middle name), but I definitely wouldn't choose "Servo" for a first name.

We wouldn't do Thomas because a) too common of a name and b) my fiancee has an Uncle Tom who's done some very bad things

Can nobody ever name their baby son Servo?
Why is Ryland or Grayson totally acceptable for a baby name but not Servo? All of them are just 2 syllables where it's2 random sounds put together. Ryland and Grayson have no real meaning though. Whereas Servo is a hilarious character on arguably the greatest TV show ever made.
I appreciate everyone's input

I appreciate everyone's input I'm looking at it from the kid's perspective, and my assumption is that he wouldn't like having such a quirky name. But maybe I'm wrong. Really what you should do is get feedback from actual people who have unique and unusual names (Moon Unit, anyone?). There's probably an AskReddit post about it. If the vast majority of people say that they like their name, then you're probably in the clear.

Well, when you come right down to it: ALL names were made up at SOME point. Some names are just that people liked the sounds together, others have meaning in their original language. But all words, period, were "made up" at some point. "Declan" is not just random syllables put together, it's a traditional Irish name that means "man of prayer". "Grayson" is an Anglo-Saxon name that means "son of a greve" (which is an earl). "Weston" means "house built on a waste land" from Old English. "Aidan" is from Middle English, meaning "to help". "Servo" itself is not some "random" sound. It's short for servomechanism, or servomotor. So, if you really want to name your son after some mechanized thing, hey, we all have names derived from SOMETHING. You just have to consider if down the line your kid is going to get teased about it or resent you or something in the future. Servo sounds pretty cool, actually. Servo Jones. Sounds good. (I don't know your last name, but Jones works good with Servo). So, it doesn't really sound bad, and it's cool if your son can say he was named after some cool character on a cool show. You just have to think about it for a while. There's no way to know how he'll react in the future. Celebrities name their kids unusual names, as you've said. So, who knows?

People are free to name their children as they please, but I'd put more thought into it than "puppet from show i liked" As for Thomas, that is our son's name. There were many reasons for it, surrounding a central one, but that is another story....
You are asking us what we think, what does the soon-to-be-mother think?
