I got the new Vol. 11 reissue. The Horrors Of Spider Island has a noticeable difference from the old Rhino copy. The first host segment (Mike getting caught in the web), along with the following two spaghetti ball bumpers, are in black and white! Very weird! Had to pull out my old copy to verify, yes, it was in color before. So my question to the MSTies is: Was the first segment black and white when it aired on Sci-Fi back in the day, or is this a strange, new anomaly? Any one got a fan copy they could check?

According to this copy of the episode, the segment did not air in black and white. It must be an error with the DVD, but a very strange one.

I would contact Shout about it. It's either an error with the issue (hello collector's copy...) or it's an oddly intentional stylistic choice, like those colorizations of Plan 9 that make the alien turn green when he's punched.
(Except in this case it's the show making fun of the movie being altered rather than the remastered movie being observed...)

I have the same quirk on my re-issue- Black & white segment. I feel like I remember this originally being in B&W when first aired (like it's "supposed to be part of the movie") but I don't have full trust in my 20-year memory...

I have a taped copy from a later re-run on Sci-Fi that I KNOW that segment is in color.
Its possible the original broadcast was B&W. I may have a copy of that first broadcast somewhere, I'll have to look for it. But it may just be Shout messing up.

I've used archived programming data from Inner Mind's Syfy Channel schedule listings to confirm my tape copy is from the 11pm Sunday episode premiere. The first host segment and spaghetti bumper are both in color. In fact, none of the host segments are in black and white. The door segment leading up to this break is likewise in color (as it should be); is that also black and white on the new DVD? If so, and this is just a shot in the dark, I wonder if this is an early unreleased master where the editor accidentally applied the video settings for the preceding theater segment to the host segment too. Another possibility is that this is how it was originally intended to be seen, although apparently never broadcast as such.

I contacted Shout!, and yes, this was a mistake. They are working on correcting it (!), I should hear from them in a few days. Attachments:

Kinda sad, though, I was hoping it was meant to be that way. Nice detective work! Sad that it's not a "how it was meant to be seen!" kinda thing, though, that would've been nifty.

And here I was all "I'm bitter, you look at it" and such. Then lo and behold, a replacement disc arrived. With said segment in color! Shout! is amazing, why would I ever doubt them. We all have our days...

A year or so back I bought a set that was missing one of the mini posters. I reached out and a few weeks later the missing poster showed up in a flat envelope. Shout are good people.

But is there word on a retail reissue? Like Rhino's volume 7 blunder, I'll be holding out until the fixed set hits stores.
