So many of you have mentioned one of the reasons why I boycott Netflix.
It would be comical, but in seriousness I don't think bouncing from streamer to streamer would be a feasible plan — for much the same reason: most of the competition for subscribers in that venue is driven by exclusivity of certain flagship “intellectual properties”; they all provide much the same “service” and go about their business in much the same way.
Speaking of pipe dreams: I have plans for investing much of my funds in many other creative projects which take priority because they are original, but I wonder if there is some way to conceive an MST3k spin–off which can produce one–shot episodes with minimal cost.

[Shout!] could probably come up with decent projections of how well a volume of four brand new episodes might sell, and reverse engineer a budget. Man, you'd think so, they've been making and selling volumes for years. But, I don't think you can beat RiffTrax format. Put out a single new ep every 2-4 weeks that you sell for a premium. Then, later have some sales, and eventually put out the bluray set of the group, whether that's 4 or 6 or whatever.

If Shout wants to get serious about their streaming, maybe even run a paid service, then MST3K would be the first thing they put on it. That would thematically be comparable to MST3K getting such good treatment on The Comedy Channel when they switched to cable for their first season. Huge blocks of time, and them having nice, two-hour shows to take up temportal real estate...

News at 11: Twitter is awful and is a cancer on society. Today's story: Joel makes a joke about the Cats movie, a fan suggests Rifftrax should do the movie, and it goes downhill from there.
Bill and Frank try to figure out what's going on:
Joel continues to dig himself an even deeper hole. Someone suggests he should do a movie discussion podcast like Trace and Frank, and I'm still trying to figure out where this non sequitur response came from:
Some guy tries to explain to Joel that this whole interaction is coming off poorly, and Joel plays dumb:
Welcome to 2020, where your bad days and regrettable conversations are broadcast live to the world and can never be erased.

The whole thing is a cluster-fudge. Just...turn off Twitter Joel. The tongue-in-cheek tone got lost awhile ago, now it's just...sonething else.
Go to bed, old man.

Joel's constant pointing to the "100% on Rotten Tomatoes" statistic is beginning to grate. Very reminiscent of Jay Leno always pointing out that his Tonight Show was "number one" in the Nielsen ratings.

It should come as no surprise. The young, friendly Joel Robinson was a character. Actual human being Joel Hodgson can be nice, but he can also be a dick.

It should come as no surprise. The young, friendly Joel Robinson was a character. Actual human being Joel Hodgson can be nice, but he can also be a dick. He's growing into the myth of Jim Mallon being a d*ck at the same rate that Jim Mallon is growing out of the myth that Jim Mallon was a d*ck. This is so sad to see from Joel.

Social media brings out the worst in everyone. It's a negative influence on our lives, but people just keep on using it.

It's been awhile since I've been around here but I have been lurking off and on and I have to say that it is sad to see Joel be like this, I've never really been a fan of his but respect him as the creator of MST3K, the last year or so I had started hearing about Joel being a bit rude about things like signings or just interactions in general.

I've long since given up the idea that the people I admire are perfect people. Many times really creative and/or successful people have bad traits. So what if Joel acts like a jerk once in a while, he's human.
Now if one of the people I admire does something really evil, that's a different story. Someone who lies and cheats almost daily is different. Joel getting cranky over the success of RiffTrax's here and there is petty but it's not evil.
I'd bet if historical figures had access to Twitter, etc. all of them would have put their foot in their mouths more than once. (Let's look at the tweets of an 18 year old George Washington/Abe Lincoln. He shouldn't be president because...) There no one who ever lived who could be perfect all the time.

Not the best of responses from Joel but considering what I've seen on twitter lately at least he didn't follow that up with "you're not a Star Wars fan if you only watched the movies" or "if you used the rewind feature you didn't actually beat the *** damn game"

Wow, that's pretty sh*ty. And I know and agree with the sentiments about twitter and being human and all that, but dude, when you read through that, it is totally Joel escalating it. All the responses from MST3K alum and fans are very polite, even kid-glove-y toward Joel, and he just keeps barreling forward. No one said Joel has to be a saint, but just more fuel on the feeling that my future riffing dollars should go to RiffTrax and The Mads...

I refuse to Twit chiefly for this reason. “Microblogging”? No; I'm pretty certain that I know exactly why Tw*tter has become so popular. You need something to exploit people's innate need to express their casual, momentary thoughts for the purposes of future blackmail and character assassination? Invent Tw*tter. Nobody needs to know its nefarious, ulterior purpose. (snip) just more fuel on the feeling that my future riffing dollars should go to RiffTrax and The Mads... Joel versus Mike… Maybe some of us should get together and brainstorm a new format. One which does homage to the entire genre but takes a fresh direction. No ties to the old schools, but doors open for them. Not working to steal acclaim, but to build upon it. I have a few ideas. When my website is up and running, I'll share more for anyone who might be interested.
