Also, more backstory on Tom that I found. He's known Jim since college. And he worked at the PBS station (still does) in Madison where Jim and Kevin met before they all made Blood Hook. And according to Kevin in a Twitter post, "Tommy" is considered "MST3K family". So he has the bona fides to have these tapes. I just want to know why and how.

I'm tagging Udvarnoky jocksinclair and @codyhimes as I know you guys are interested in the DVD issues and the original master tapes, etc. And mylungswereaching because I like to keep him in the loop on my tape transfer activities while I continue to work on his tapes. Thanks dude! I have to go through my list and take a look, but I am definitely HUGELY interested in that copy of "Catalina Caper". There's footage missing from the Rhino disc, and the Shout disc is poorly cropped, and because the episode was released so long ago, I never saw a good fan copy on DAP or anything like that.

Got a response:
"I worked with Best Brains as an audio consultant from the time they opened until they closed. I also mixed the live shows they did during that time. So whenever I was there I would grab a bunch of tapes to take home."
So from that, one can extrapolate that he informally, (but semipermanently) assisted Brad and his predecessor when it came to mixing their episodes and was there often enough (they only did 2 live shows: 1992 & 1994, the 1996 show was cancelled when Trace resigned) to amass at least 30+ (and counting) tapes over the years. Since he works/worked for the Madison PBS station as their sound-mixer, he would prob drive to Minneapolis every other week to help with the sound mix (which, again, took 8 workdays). He prob wasn't credited because it'd cause problems with his PBS job.

I don't think I've seen the Shout version of 204. Can you give me a frame of reference for how it was cropped badly? The one bad thing about VHS tranfers is that the bottom ~10 rows of the picture get distorted/cut off by head-switching noise in what's referred to as the "overscan" area. I usually edit them out of my final product as they're distracting, but sometimes the DVD releases include those areas clean because they got them off the masters. Is that the cropping you're referring to?

I just checked to confirm, and I was slightly misremembering; "Cave Dwellers" is the one where it is horribly cropped, they cropped some of the top and also zoomed it, so that parts of both sides are lost as well. "Catalina Caper" is cropped, but it appears to be more of a framing issue. If you just watched the Shout disc, you might not notice that it's cropped, but the bottom frame line is much higher than it should be, and everything is shifted upwards. Using the sort of distortion you're talking about as a frame of reference, I'd very roughly estimate that it's cropped by about 100-200% of the size you're thinking of on the top, although the picture is shifted such that the extra bar is on the bottom.

Uploaded 622-Angels Revenge to Archive.org as YouTube kept erroneously flagging it as the Rifftrax version. This tape had the most odd stuff on it by far. Starting with a bit of time-coded Speech: Platform Posture from show 619, then a color bar, then a production slate.

If you are in contact with the other people, you should check with whoever got "Pod People". (I'm assuming somebody got "Pod People".)
There are several oddities with how that episode aired, so I would be a bit curious to know how the master handles the final commercial break; as it aired, there was repeating footage there.
But potentially much more valuable, the "MST3k Hour" version of "Pod People" has extra riffed footage around the non-bumper commercial break [around an hour into the movie]. This is the part where the kid is showing toys and games to Trumpy; the second half is when they're playing with the "Simon" game. I'm assuming that the only way such an oversight could happen is if there was extra footage on one of the master copies somewhere. There's currently no circulating copy of this that I'm aware of, so it would be a great find.

A new batch is available... Delete that, please. I'm hoping to god no one else notices. Let it be known that I've already put in a ridiculously high bid. And realistically I'm the best suited to win them, as I'll share them with everyone. So please. Do. Not. Bid. *best Sting in Dune voice* I WILL win those tapes!

Update. Got the tapes yesterday. They look great. I'm going to do some experimenting on 201, as I'm going to share it directly via Google Drive, see if I can upscale to 720p60fps, which might take some time. Same for Eye Creatures.
