We all watch MST3K with different preferences and we all find different things funny. I'm curious to know who likes what. Rather than go into high-minded details about the proper definitions of "film genres", I've just put a bunch of different general descriptions. And hey, some of these could easily apply to more than one movie (Mitchell is both a "cool" action hero, and a police doing cop stuff, and probably some other things, they both work.)
I've intentionally left a few gaps, of course. "Comedy" isn't up there despite how much I like Catalina Caper.
Whether you find the category that fits your favorite kinds of movies or have to make copious use of the "Other" category, do tell us what you like.
Me? I'm a huge fan of spaceship movies. Not necessarily things like Space Mutiny where it's really about having the ship as a notable location for the action, more stuff like Rocketship X-M, The Phantom Planet, Prince of Space and... I'll count This Island Earth among these as well...

Giant monster movies almost always make for a good time. Crawling Eye, Devil Fish, Gorgo, and Yongary are shining examples of this in my book.

I like the diversity MST has for the most part, but my heart will always be with monster movies.

the non-sci-fi/horror movies appeal to me the most, i believe, because i wasn't expecting the show to have ever covered movies outside of that frame when i was just aware of it by name only

Were there any experiments with a "Really Cool Hero"? Seems to me most of the "heroes" weren't exactly "cool" or were lacking the "hero" quality. Maybe Steve Reeves. Maybe.
I went with the Creature Features, Spaceships Exploring Space, and Fantasy Adventure, although there are a few in all three that I don't care for all that much.

Don't you dare besmirch the classic Italian icon of Pumaman. I stand corrected. I also should mention Samson, AKA El Santo, as well. It takes a certain amount of cool factor and panache to pull off wearing those outfits.

"Other". I like them all, really, and it just depends on what movie or short is playing and how much I like the riffs that determines whether it will be a favorite of mine or not. Give me a mix of everything.

The crime ones for me. Teen-Age Strangler, Radar Secret Service, Teen-Age Crime Wave, Girls Town and The Sinister Urge are among my favorite episodes.

It takes a certain amount of cool factor and panache to pull off wearing those outfits. To this day, one of my favorite moments in MST3K is the sudden burst of laughter from Crow when Samson first leaps into the movie. The guy's got style.---- The crime ones for me. Teen-Age Strangler, Radar Secret Service, Teen-Age Crime Wave, Girls Town and The Sinister Urge are among my favorite episodes. I briefly wondered if I should do a "crime" category, or if the combination of Spy movie and Police Work would cover it. ...Diabolik is a spy movie, right? I mean, yes, he's clearly just a flashy jewel thief, but in terms of story beat progression, it *is* a spy movie. ...right? ---- Also, should I have had a "Teens" movie category? There's a lot of movies that seem to focus on teens being teens, but I don't know if there's enough to really stand out from the crowd as a genre.

1 - Creature Features 2 - Spaceship/Exploration 3 - Fantasy/Adventure I'd say that's a solid selection. ...probably a safe bet that it covers an easy majority of the films covered as well, so the categories keep themselves in good company, I'd wager.

Pretty much, yes. And for that reason these were easy votes to cast. I would have gone for "Spy Movie" but while I adore 508 O peration Double 007: Kid Brother and 815 Agent for H.A.R.M. and have them among my favorites, there arent that many other spy films nor do those, imo, make for very good episodes. Could say the same for "Occult Horror," which is something they could have done a lot more of and I wish that they had, and "Time Travel."

Unless I'm forgetting something, I think the only "time travel" movies are Time Chasers, The Time Travelers, and The Day Time Ended (maybe Time of the Apes and Terror from the Year 5000, I guess). I'm not really sold that it had that big of a presence on the show.
But I like time travel movies so I voted for it.

But I like time travel movies so I voted for it. Yeah, that's genuinely the intended deciding factor. Not "Did most of my favorite episodes fall into the category" so much as "Hey, I liked that category more than a number of others." And "time travel" feels like a branch of sci-fi that doesn't necessarily get a lot of screen time with other branches of sci-fi. You get things like Planet of the Apes, of course, and Doctor Who's been mixing genres for decades, but for the most part you don't see the big spaceships or science experiment monsters gone wild when you get to time travel stories (said with apologies to H. G. Wells and his Morlocks aplenty).
