I'm hoping we get at least one of the Lou Ferrigno Hercules movies.

If he's doing shorts, isn't he going to be forced to riff on B&W at that aspect ratio? I know there are later shorts in color, but I hope those aren't the only ones he's going to target. Odds are, he has to do some B&W with those, and maybe he gives in and does some of the cheesy old B&W features as well.
And I like the Herc episodes, a Ferrigno one would be aces!

From my understanding the shorts are going to be independent of the episodes and released in between each, so Joel likely doesn't have the same HD standard for them that he does the actual movies. The one Emily, Conor, and Nate did last year was in 4:3.

In the new update, Joel said they have rights lined up to 9 of the 13 films so far.

In the new update, Joel said they have rights lined up to 9 of the 13 films so far. and if all else fails, he could always call on the studio called, The Public Domain, own by us, the people.

Incidentally, A*P*E is featured on RedLetterMedia's Best of the Worst today.
While debating what was the Best of the Worst, they commented that A*P*E is the perfect MST3K movie that was never on MST3K.

Update today announced they would be back to riffing black and white movies but only confirmed they would be riffing one and that it's from 1961. Also Joel explained that the decision to embargo those movies was because they were afraid of turning off the new crowd of fans and to better fit in with Netflix's colorful lineup of new shows.
Joel also claims Netflix never asked them to change the films they riffed, so maybe Atlantic Rim was their choice and he only picked it to appeal to the newer Netflix generation?

For those interested in what may be considered the worst movies 1961, here's a handy list. I'm not sure which ones are in black and white.

If I had to guess, it's Creature From The Haunted Sea.

Based on the trailer I just watched, The Mask from 1961 would be a fun choice. It's in 3-D too.

they were afraid of turning off the new crowd of fans and to better fit in with Netflix's colorful lineup of new shows. Too bad, because a B&W episode would have helped the show stand out more among such a colorful landscape. Also, the show's success was partly built on riffing B&W movies. You can't just replace them with color movies, because B&W movies have a completely different tone. They're also more family-friendly, which is another cornerstone of the show's success. Hopefully Joel has realized that now and we'll see more B&W episodes in the future (one is nice, but more would be better).

You know I've been looking around the last few months, at bloggers and websites and such, and I was surprised to see a few viewers mention that they didn't like B&W - I don't know if this is a new generation of fans, or if there were always MSTies like that, but it seems an odd thing because B&W was such a staple of the original run. I don't have the exact number handy, but it seems like hating B&W means your unhappy with a large portion of the series.
In the update, Joel mentions that 47% of this kickstarter was funded by new backers, and that they heard from fans that many of them discovered the show on Netflix. So to his mind, sticking with color was part of the reason for that. Thankfully, he's going to offer at least 1 B&W, and hasn't closed the book on more.

Looking at the link Kolos provided, and I agree, Creature From the Haunted Sea would be a good one. But I imagine Joel would want cleaned up copies? And if that's a factor that could narrow the field. Werewolf in a Girls' Dormitory isn't in bad shape, that might work. Not sure how prints of Haunted Sea look. Oh, but who the %$#@ put a Satyajit Ray film on that list, on his worst day he's never, ever directed the 17th worst film in a year. And that documentary on Rabindranath Tagore was pretty damned good.

I saw Creature from the Haunted Sea a few months ago on TCM, and it may be a little too much of a comedy. It could be done, but it's as broad in places as Catalina Caper, maybe more so with the way the "creature" is designed to be goofy looking. Still, it's a Corman movie, and has the typical Corman targets.

As long as I live, I will never understand this silly aversion some people have to black and white. They are cutting themselves off from decades of great films. And they must really hate the opening and closing scenes of The Wizard of Oz.
