Some directors put in things like that to evoke emotions of sympathy or hatred from the audience. He got all hatred. Much more than he wanted.

That was great. As much as Mary Jo the performer got under my skin like a bad rash. Mary Jo the person seems very likable and genuine and Mary Jo the comdic writer is very talented and clever.
