I think Nirvana did some great covers of David Bowie and the Meat Puppets on their Unplugged album. A very bad cover, and a worse cover up was Vanilla Ice doing Under Pressure from Queen and Bowie. Just awful! No way! Didn't you ever hear him doing the totally different sounds that were used? Complete original! I'm totally kidding by the way. He's a joke.

Talk about David Bowie reminds me...there's a little known singer/songwriter named Happy Rhodes who did a cover of Bowie's "Ashes to Ashes" that is absolutely terrifying amazing. It brings out all the terrible sadness of that song in a way that Bowie's production never could. Whether you like Bowie or not, that song is enough to make you hunt down Happy Rhodes. So go.
Are you still here?
And for strange cover concepts. Will Oldham did a cover album of his own songs. They aren't better than the originals.

I remember a cover of Come On, Eileen that was pretty good, but I can't remember who made the original or the punky, poppy group that covered it. Save Ferris maybe? I really liked that one.
Oh and David Bowie made a whole album of covers, which I don't have unfortunately. Anyone have that one?

I've heard that Come on Eileen one, though I couldn't tell ya for sure it's by. I think it's funny how many 80's songs have already been covered.

Oddest one ever was Frente!'s version of "Bizarre Love Triangle." They took a techno song and made it acoustic. Yeah, I did like that Frente! cover. Nowhere near as good as New Order's original, but interesting. Oh, and yeah, the "Come On Eileen" cover was Save Ferris. I liked that, too.

Dexie's Midnight Runners did Come On Eileen originally - yeah, it was Save Ferris on the remake (it was ok). I've always liked the Guns N' Roses cover of Nazareth's Hair of the Dog. There, I finally thought of one I liked. Stone Temple Pilots also did a good job on Led Zep's Dancing Days.

Some other great ones:
Ben Folds Five's cover of "She Don't Use Jelly", originally done by The Flaming Lips.
King's X's cover of Jimi's "Manic Depression".
Stevie Ray Vaughan's cover of Jimi's "Little Wing".
Some other terrible ones:
Counting Crows doing "Big Yellow Taxi"
Madonna doing "American Pie"
Nearly anyone doing the Beatles.

Speaking of Stevie Ray Vaughan, his cover of Jimmie’s “Voodoo Child” is extremely bad-ass. I think his guitar work actually sounds better than Hendrix. Less sloppy, but with the same heart.
Led Zeppelin’s “When the Leavy Breaks” is actually a cover of an old Memphis Minnie (SP?) song by the same name.

Dinosaur Jr.'s cover of the Cure's "Just Like Heaven." The verses are just Macis screwing around and moaning...but the chorus: Death rock bridge from nowhere!
Excellent ripping apart of a pop classic.

Dexie's Midnight Runners did Come On Eileen originally - yeah, it was Save Ferris on the remake (it was ok). The DMR song was actually a slight variation on a traditional Irish ballad called "Too-La-Ray"

The Dead Kennedys' cover of "Viva Las Vegas" is pretty damn awesome.

I just downloaded the supposed Type O Negative cover of "Hit me Baby One More Time." I don't think there's any way that's legit. It just sounds like a very heavily distorted version of the original recording.

Good Covers:
"I Am the Wallrus" by Oasis "The Man Who Sold the World" by Nirvana "All Along the Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix "Carol" by the Rolling Stones "Nothing Compares 2 You" by Stereophonics (I was shocked how good this was.)
