I would happily buy a set of just KTMA episodes, but that's what makes me me.
I honestly think that Shout could market KTMA box sets by taking the old shows and producing a new soundtrack with new riffs. I remember Joel talking about redoing the KTMA episodes in an interview. My idea is: Take the KTMA episodes, record a NEW soundtrack with whoever (likely the new cast) riffing not just the movie, but also the host segments and show itself (you'd remix the audio so that all but select riffs from the KTMA movie segments are actually heard, if any at all). Then you include the original show audio as a secondary audio track. So you wind up with basically an entirely new episode of the show with new riffs as well as the unmolested historical document. Hell, even if whoever is riffing it was just doing it causally (the same way KTMA eps were riffed) it'd still be entertaining. Shout could potentially dip their toe in the water by doing one episode this way and including it on an upcoming set (if there actually is one).
People would buy KTMA shows out of loyalty or curiosity, at least as far as they'd go to buy ANY MST3K DVD set, be happy about the added value (new riffs!), and keep the current cast in the spotlight between seasons. It might also convert old-school fans who haven't gotten into the Netflix incarnation. All for whatever it costs to get a handful of MST3K cast members to come in and record an audio commentary. Preface it with a video intro explaining it all, and you got MSTie magic!

The idea of releasing a KTMA episode as essentially the bonus feature of a re-riff is intriguing. The riffing in those episodes is so rough that it really wouldn't feel like going over old ground so much fulfilling untapped potential. Some of those movies were ripe for a treatment that the team was not yet ready to deliver in 1988 - and you can tell the Brains thought along similar lines when they gave some Gamera films another crack in Season 3. Heck, I'm still waiting for ROBOT HOLOCAUST redux from Rifftrax or any of these successor teams.

First we're assuming that the KTMA episodes are in good enough shape for them to have something to build on. Shout cancelled the KTMA host segment DVD because of "quality issues" so that doesn't sound promising. Then they'd have to license the film which would probably not be any cheaper than a standard episode. Then add the cost of getting talent in. Hmm. I'm not entirely against the idea. I'm just not sure enough of the more casual fans would be into it considering their lack of fondness toward anything from the Josh Weinstein Era. Incidentally, Rifftrax has revisited Hangar 18 and The Million Eyes of Su-Muru, so if you want to check out new riffs for those movies you can.

I think if they were going to realistically do anything with the KTMA episodes it would have been when they had the Gamera license. They had to have known that wouldn't have lasted forever, and that's about 1/4 of the season.

The two KTMA'a that were the Kickstarter bonuses that looked pretty darn good for thirty year old tapes. I think Joel changed his mind on releasing the KTMA episodes only in recent years, so even if Shout wanted to do it when they had the Gamera rights, that may have been an obstacle.
Given Shouts history with "tape hits" over the years and Lost Continent looking like it had been chewed on by rodents, "quality issues" seems a curious reason to nix the host segment DVD.

It was quality issues in the context of promising a COMPLETE compilation of host segments that also had a specific deadline. That doesn't mean that it's been deemed impossible for all time, or that there aren't a selection of episodes that are perfectly suitable for release.

Make me wonder if there are any KTMA episodes missing and they only belatedly noticed?

I've seen this DVD listed before! Anyone know if it's the FVI version or just something slapped together using the AIP version and a new video-generated title card? It's the AI-TV version but the title card is even worse than you'd think. Gonna quote myself from the Monster Zero forums: www.scifijapan.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=21206&p=504562#p504155Excellent! I'm a long time member of the Monster Zero forums, surprised I missed the info! So glad to finally see a pic of the Majestic Home Video cover! "The original mutant turtle"

i enjoy the KTMA episodes to be honest, for me i think witch each episode as you watch them in order like i do you can tell that with each episode the show is slowly getting better as the guys are figuring out how to do it. and if you watch some of the really early ones than watch the later ones you can tell it vastly improved. honestly i think the KTMA episodes are really underrated. there are some bad episodes there's not a question about that but than i can say that about later season episodes as well.

That doesn't mean that it's been deemed impossible for all time, or that there aren't a selection of episodes that are perfectly suitable for release. They didn't actually promise a complete compilation, what they said was:
"MST3K: The (Nearly) Definitive KTMA Segment Collection
"Though some footage from this primordial age was inevitably lost (or possibly still await discovery locked in some ancient, underground tomb), scientists have painstakingly reassembled every existing KTMA host segment and used advanced technological techniques to transfer them all to the disc you hold in your hand. Thanks to the miracle of science, we present The (Nearly) Definitive KTMA Segment Collection."
I think they did say they were still hoping to release it in the future, so I think it might wind up being the 4th disc in the volume 40 / 30th anniversary set.

Mine too, especially the part where Joel and the bots laid into MegaBillsDocs for their so-called "cutting-edge technologies."

So with the release of Volume XII this past week, that completes our Shout collection releases. You are a very smart, and perceptive bunch collectively. What do you guys see as the next Shout release ??
I'm only into the "classic" period, as neither the Minneapolis episodes, nor the Netflix episodes really do much for me. I'm not paying ridiculous prices for the original Volume X, just for Godzilla, and being too cheap to spring for the going rate on the out of print single episodes (Cuba, Bat Women, grasshoppers, etc.) should I just consider my collection realistically "complete", or do you guys see one last hurrah for Shout...""

A lot of people are hoping that the 3 Paramount titles (Fire Maidens from Outer Space, The Deadly Bees, The Space Children) are going to be available for Shout to get the rights for (some speculation it's this year that Paramount's deal with Olive is ending), and that those 3, either with a wild card episode like Quest of the Delta Knights (maybe they finally found out who owns it?) or possibly just those 3 and a bonus disc will be the next set.
