I think it was either just to make it feel more theater-y for the audience, either that or CC (known before for worrying about how obvious the silhouettes were) asked for it to be displayed so people could see the silhouettes better, or something.

Back in the 80's when stereo tv shows were still kind of a novelty, tv shows (like Miami Vice, for example) used to show a message during the opening credits that said "IN STEREO - WHERE AVAILABLE" or some variation of the same.. This is just a play on that sort of thing.
You see it now with HD broadcasts.

90% of the show (and 25% of the words in its title) involves a theater. What's the first thing that happens in a theater when the show starts? Bingo!
Err...no, they don't actually play bingo.

Well, all reasons really. They stopped it after a season or two, I think. It started in Season Two. How long did it last? It was only in Joel episodes.

Hmm...
I know they did it through Seasons 2 and 3. I think the first 2 or 3 episodes of Season 4 had it before they started "Mystery Science Theater episode XXX, reel one". Which they stopped doing at the end of Season 5.

And for some unknown reason, these aforementioned opening bits aren't on any of the official dvds.

I do remember the "Turn down the lights" ones being on the old VHS releases, which makes it even stranger.

As for turning down the lights, well, nobody was still supposed to be watching, everyone was supposed to be necking by that point. soooo.....*smooch smooch smooch*??

I think the "Reel One" slates began in S4 with Being From Another Planet. . .but I could be wrong.

mrmeadows, you were so close. According to Satellite News, it was actually two episodes earlier in #403: "City Limits": "• With this episode, the “Turn down your lights (where applicable)” message that began every episode since the beginning of season two is replaced by a title card featuring a still from the movie and a gruff voice (usually that of editor Tim Scott) saying “Mystery Science Theater 3000, show [show number here]; reel one.”" Here's the link for Season 4 there: www.mst3kinfo.com/?page_id=246It's interesting reading and in 402 they explain why Pearl knew Crow as "Art".

I do not dare question the Satellite News, but I could swear my VHS copy of CITY LIMITS begins with the "Turn Down Your Lights" card. . .or maybe no card at all. I'll have to check my copy tonight. I definitely don't remember a "Reel one" slate card for this episode.
(However, they are definitely correct about TEENAGERS FROM OUTER SPACE having a Reel One slate prior to BEING FROM ANOTHER PLANET.)

I'm intrigued now. Be sure to tell us, as City Limits, Teenagers from Outer Space and Being From Another Planet all surprisingly show up in the set of experiments that I don't own.
I should probably stop the scatter-shot approach to episode purchasing and go to a more linear one...
