I'm thinking of back in 1984 when they were organizing the celebrity season, do you think or have heard of SNL thinking of having Joel as a regular cast member. Because they were having him on as comedian on quite often and really the era of signing a standup comedian and putting him on SNL as a non host was pretty dead by that point.
Also he was the only one in the last episode of ninth season that appeared who was not a host or cast member.

I don't know that he would have been very good at that. I just don't see Joel doing a lot of characters that SNL would require. Even on MST he fumbled his lines a lot. However I think Trace would have been greaton SNL.

Well I think that Mike would have made the best SNL member, look at the character he could play Torgo, Jack Perkins, Mothra or even an Issac Assimov Doomsday Device.
I'm not saying he would have been good or bad, but if he was considered or on anyones mind.

As much fondness as I have for Joel, he's really not much of a character comedian. He's way too low-energy to excel at that kind of thing.
But I agree, of the MST3K cast, I think Mike and Trace would be the best suited to sketch comedy. Kevin Murphy also would do well too, I think.

I don't know how well Joel would have done on live TV considering how nervous and fidgety he looked on MST3K sometimes. Mike on the other hand seemed to have the knack for ad-libbing and going with the flow better. Hell, I would have liked to have seen any of them on there instead of Jon Lovitz.

Yes, Joel's comedy has to revolve around his personality. Mike is more versatile. In the theater Trace did a lot of celebrity imputations. Not necessarily Rich Little kind of impressions but great comedy impressions. He would have done very well in an ensemble skit show.

I never saw a Joel episode (I am JUST getting one in the mail!) But I would have prefered him over any one on the current SNL cast, truthfully.

I am constantly surprised that the show keeps attracting such young fans. I started watchiung Joel shows but to you he will seem the "new guy". Please post again after you've seen a few Joel eps.

First of all, welcome Chemical.
I think it's great that the show is finding a whole new generation of fans, literally. Many fans who were older teenagers when the show started in 89 (I was 13) now have kids old enough to appreciate the show. I have no kids yet, but I plan to, and they will start watching MST3K pretty early, I'm sure. I plan to have all these DVDs for the rest of my life. Somebody's gonna watch 'em!
Chemical - did your parents introduce you to the show?

Chemical - did your parents introduce you to the show? Here is a little tidbit for you. The last quarter, last year in school I had an about 1.0 GPA without sports. During the summer I rediscovered MST3K. This trimester I have an about 3.0 GPA and I played football and it's my first year of high school (sophomores are the lowest class). All I can say is thanks MST3K.

So, the show inspired you to play football and study? I don't get it.
Just being an annoying prick,

Loren Michaels loved Joel, so much so he was trying to work out a deal to get him his own sitcom.
This was actually one of the things that made Joel retire from comedy for a while. The guy just doesn't like the spotlight on him, he's not "Hollywood" and pulls back whenever it seemed like he was on the verge of becoming a huge star.
For example: He was really getting big in standup -performing on Letterman and SNL- then abruptly retires. Later (after unretiring), MST is getting so big there's a movie deal in the works and again, he pulls back -He even mentioned the movie talks as something that didn't thrill him, in interviews done near the time he left the show.
During the times he did Soultaker, e made a comment that he's "Not an actor". Odd then, that he took a small role in "Freeks and Geeks"?

No one mentioned Bill Corbett or Frank...I think they are ideally suited to sketch comedy too...Mary Jo would be quite better than a lot of the usual SNL women too, methinks... oh, yeah this post was about Joel...
