I've been watching MST3K (as well as Rifftrax on Pluto TV) a lot more often in recent months, since my dad passed away last October. Things have been kinda stressful and rough, needless to say, but watching MST3K and Rifftrax does put me in a much better mood, and do find myself laughing a lot more, than when trying to watch other shpws, or just laughing at things in general.
Has the same ever happened for anyone else here? MST3K provided a sort of escape from anxiety and depression?

I remember Joel also saying that one reason he'd be hesitant about a Joel/Mike cross-over thing is because it's something they'd have to live up to for fans' expectations, and what if it came out disappointing to them?

Personally, I think if Jonah leaves, they should try out a female host. Kate McKinnon would be awesome on the show.

Gorgo is one of those episodes where the riffing is strongest during the actual monster sequences, and the film doesn't really become Gorgo-centric until the 3rd act.
As for episodes, I consider "worst". It's hard for me to give an exact answer without going to a Season 1 episode, and that's not really fair. I try to pick an episode when the show established itself. That said, 102 - Robot Vs. The Aztec Mummy is the worst of Season 1.
Of course I frequently rag on Season 8's "Invasion of the Neptune Men" which features a mind-numbing dour film, and some not up-to-par riffing. I swear half the jokes in the episode are just comments on how bad the film is, and not actual riffs on what's happening in the film itself. "Neptune men" does have the famous 'Noh Theather' host segment, which i love.

Oh yeah, I'm sure it's not uncommon.
It helps that MST3K assists you in how to cope with them, and how to properly make fun of them.

I find the KTMA era ok. It helps that most of the episodes (barring a few examples) have fairly watchable movies. They're not "bad" films, just cheesy films. So, the movies are easy to watch, and the fewer density of riffs just feel like a bonus.

Joey the Lemur. It just went on far too long. Amen. Also didn't that lemur sketch appear before the scene referenced in the movie? Because that made the sketch seem initially even more pointless. Not only that, the animal in question isn't even a lemur! It's a kinkajou!

Probably a good a time as any to make this confession (if I haven't mentioned it before, I can't remember).
When i first saw 'Soultaker", I wasn't aware at that point that Joel Hodgson was the original host. I just knew he was the creator of the show. So when he turned up in the host segments, it didn't strike me as a "reunion" sort of thing, but rather a bizarre "breaking the 4th wall moment", where the creator of the show just shows up, and saves his characters.

I have vague memories of seeing the show while channel surfing back in 1997, but I don't think I really bothered to stop and watch it, not until around 1998.

In general, just any time they did a host segment that didn't seem to have much point, or just seemed like a stream of conscious with no payoff. The square dance host segment from "Blood Lust" being an example.

The problem with the movie is that we will never really know if it would have worked for general audiences or not, because for all intents and purposes it never got put in front of one. It seems less accurate to say the movie was unsuccessful than that it was put into a situation where success was not a possible outcome. The result is the same, of course, but there will always be that nagging question of What If. To me, the live shows have shown that I think MST3K: The Movie could have possibly done very well at the box office if it had a wider release. Then again, MST3K I think is a bit more on people's consciousness now than it was in 1996. I would have liked to have seen Plan 9 be the film of choice for The Movie, as opposed to This Island Earth, which would have been more befitting for a regular episode of the TV series. It'd be like with Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie, where the focus of the film was the most infamous Atari video game, "E.T.". Instead of that, creator James Rolfe decided the film should center around "Plumbers Don't Don't Wear Ties". I mean, it might still be a funny movie, but that'd be a random choice. Yeah i would have liked a big-screen, big budgeted version of the show intro instead of just.... Mike on a hamster wheel. I'd keep the host segment where the Bots try to save Mike from suffocating, as well as a better ending than the one we actually got.

I don't think "Foodfight" would work on MST3K, just for the fact that it's too talky. Jonah and the Bots wouldn't be able to get too many riffs in edgewise, or would have to talk over the movie constantly, and that film is pretty noisy as it is.
Rankin-Bass' animated Lord of the Rings films are pretty riffworthy IMO, especially the The Hobbit one. Granted it has a nostalgic charm to it, but it's also cheesy enough that it could work on MST3K.

I liked Paul Chaplin's theory. They're just some nice couple out in the country who happen to own a witch.

While we're on the subject, has anyone figured out what stuff growler and Waverly are made out of?

I was in kindergarten, heading into 1st grade, when all that was going down, so I definitely wasn't around to experience any kind of "Joel Vs. Mike" flame wars.
But, I've experienced those sorts of things with other shows when actors get switched out, or hosts change. Like, with CSI, I have vague memories of there being disagreements among fans over whether Laurence Fishburn was a suitable replacement for William Peterson. Even people going as far as saying that Fishburn caused the show's quality to drop down (even though I personally think the show started sucked a couple year's before Peterson left, but that's just me). I think there were some fights among fans, but I don't think it got overtly heated.
