I'm taking a course online for medical billing and coding. The woman doing one of the course videos can't even pronounce some words, and talks really fast, garbling words together and sh*t. Yeah, sounds like I can trust her to know what she's talking about. This is going to be fun.

I watched a video I wished I hadn't watched. It was so sad. A woman in Brazil dumped her dog on the street and drove away. She drove up to a curb in her car, opened the back seat door and a dog jumped out, all happy, wagging its tail. She reached in and grabbed another dog that was in the back seat. It had a deformed front leg and the other had been amputated so it couldn't walk good, only dragging along on its hind legs. She let the other dog back in the car (it was still wagging its tail, probably thinking they were going for a walk or something). And the disabled dog was wagging its tail, too, and tried to get back in the car. She shoved him away and he landed on his face, and she just drove off. The poor dog tried to follow the car and was walking around (or trying to) all confused. All that was caught on a security video. It said in the video that the woman's husband was working on the same street and found the dog and brought it to a shelter and left it at their door (at least that's better than dumping him on the street). Maybe the woman knew where her husband was going to be and dumped the dog for him to "take care of it" or whatever. Maybe they had had discussions about getting rid of the dog, who knows. But, SHE could have brought him to a shelter rather than just shoving him away like that on some street. That's just so heartbreaking, but at least the injured dog was being taken care of and they were looking for a good home for him. I feel sorry for the other dog, too. He has to live with those people and was probably wandering around the house wondering where his buddy went.

I hate when I'm reading or watching TV at night and I'm getting tired and think, "Oh, okay, I guess I'll go to bed."
Then I get ready for bed, change into my pajamas, wash my face, brush my teeth and hop into bed --- only to be not tired anymore and toss and turn. Welp, time to get up again. Grrr.

I have a problem I hate that feels related. I genuinely can't seem to fall asleep without occupying my brain with a book or something these days, but unless I hit just the right sweet spot of tiredness to activity I either stay awake forever, or I wind up doing weird things to the books I'm reading or my phone (throwing 'em, dropping it in a page-crumpling fashion, etc.) A mild issue, sure, but oh it vexes me so...

A German equestrian coach at the Olympics punched one of the horses with her fist and encouraged one of the riders to hit the horse hard for not wanting to jump. I wish the horse had kicked in her skull.

As if the chances of winning a lottery, percentage wise, weren't astronomical enough, because a scattered few people actually *gasp* win, those in charge feel the need to add more numbers.

How do cars always know when you have a little money coming? Mine crapped out a few weeks ago, which turned out to be a little over $1000 in repairs. The very day I found out how much it would cost I got an extra tax refund check from the IRS having to do with law changes and all the unemployment I drew last year (I had and still have a job but enough reduced hours to qualify for benefits). That check covered the repairs with a little left over. It would have been nice to hang on to that money but apparently my car is psychic.

Whoever designs chairs, whether for your living room, or even car seats, they really don't know what they're doing. And there's no one to complain to, really. They make them so there is this hump right where your head goes, so you're basically sitting with your head pushed forward. That's REALLY uncomfortable. The spot for the hump should be where your neck is, not pushing your head forward and giving you a kink in your neck and shoulders.

Recently our washing machine decided it was going to go out of balance every time I used it, even when I tested it by only having water in it. I arranged for a repairman from the local appliance store where it was originally purchased to come look at it, but it was almost a week before he could come. In the meantime I decided not to chance the thing bouncing around the floor anymore, although I did have the idea to do our underwear and socks on the hand wash cycle, which worked fine with no bouncing. I did make two trips to the local laundromat for the rest of it. Our dryer still works fine so I lugged the baskets of wet clothes home in single degree cold to dry them. When the repairman did come he found out that there were several parts almost worn out in our probably 15-year-old machine, including the suspension plate, which was the cause of it constantly going out of balance. He said the suspension plate could be fixed for a couple hundred dollars, but it would take a week or two to get the replacement part, and with the other parts wearing out he recommended we get a new one, and if we bought from them there would be no charge for the service call. Dad gave me his checkbook with a signed check and sent me to the appliance store with a $600 limit since I'm the one who does the laundry for the two of us. When I got there it was right as the repairman returned, so he helped explain the issue. It turned out there wasn't much in the budget that wouldn't take a few weeks for delivery, but then the salesman suggested a machine they had used as a loaner for another customer almost a year before. This was a Whirlpool front load with all the bells and whistles that was originally priced at over $1300. The other customer used it for a week or two while they were waiting for their own new machine to be delivered, so this one was lightly used and had been sitting in their back room ever since it was returned. They offered to sell it to us for $633, with delivery and installation bringing it up to just under $750. It was either get that one that could be delivered in three days or ordering one and possibly waiting up to a month for delivery. I couldn't call Dad to see if it was OK to go for it because I had left my cell at home and couldn't remember his cell number, and he and I both pretty much ignore the landline if we don't recognize the caller ID. I decided to go ahead with the *new* machine, made out the check and arranged for it to be delivered in three days. Fortunately, when I got home Dad was OK with going slightly over the limit. When it was delivered and installed and then plugged in it started making weird noises but wouldn't turn on. This was weird because it had worked fine at the store. They had to unplug it again so it didn't get damaged. They told me to just wait a couple hours to plug in in again because it was extremely cold outside and the machine had been in the truck for a few hours, and with the electronic controls they thought it might just need to warm up a bit. It was either that or go back and possibly end up picking out a brand new one after all. Fortunately it did work after a couple hours and it's been fine. However, the delivery guys said we should have a plumber come and put in new hoses and valves for the water supply because they were starting to leak, possibly as a result of the old machine going out of balance and putting stress on the hoses. The plumber is coming tomorrow afternoon. Fortunately, we only have concrete for the basement floor and not another surface that could be damaged by water, because there's been a pretty steady trickle of water coming out. At least it's only a few feet away from the drain in the floor so it doesn't have far to go. I do like the *new* machine and after our rough start it's been working fine for several loads now. I guess this post is just a complaint about broken appliances.

Talk about desperation. It's really cold and windy, so I went to the mall. To go for a walk.

^^^ On a kind of related note, we live less than a mile from a YMCA. More than one of our neighbors drives there to work out. I can't really say too much about that, though. If I belonged I would do the same thing. Update: The plumber came and only had to replace the valves and not the hoses. All is dry again in the basement. Now watch the dryer die soon. The week after Thanksgiving a road crew for the city I live in came to our street, which is a dead-end street. They spray-painted markings on the street and put flags in the yards to get ready for some sort of roadwork, which the street desperately needs. But why would they do this in December in Wisconsin when snow could be covering the flags and markings at any moment? Not to mention the ground being frozen. Sure enough, it has snowed a couple times which has covered the flags and we've had a lot of single-digit and below-zero temperatures. The flags being right by the side of the street means they'll get covered up by the snowplow piles. No word of when this work is going to finally start. They did the same thing about three years ago and never got any further with the preparations. As much as the street needs the work, with lots of cracks and potholes including a pothole right off the approach to our driveway, I am not looking forward to construction on a dead-end street. There's only one way to go. I know they won't block us completely from getting in and out but eventually they'll have to tackle our personal pothole. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

A petition came up on change.org to stop medical students from "practicing" pelvic exams on patients who have been anesthetized (for other procedures) and are still out and have no idea what's going on and have not given consent. It was for the state of New Mexico, but it happens in 31 states, I think it said.
Holy sh*t. I didn't know that was even a thing. That is definitely not ethical.

I just saw a video of something that happened on Sunny Isles Beach in Florida: A couple was in the ocean and they were tossing around a KITTEN, throwing it in the water and getting it to swim. It was scared and getting weak and they just kept tossing it about. A woman intervened and the guy told the woman they would stop if she would give them a thousand dollars. She called the police and they got the kitten away and the couple were resisting arrest and the woman (of the couple, not the one that saved the kitten) was screaming because they were being arrested and she was fighting the cops.
I really hate people sometimes -- well, a lot. Not just this couple, but when I was reading the comments for the video. Of course it went in the direction of racism and politics, people saying, "well, all black people are like that" and comparing them to animals and chimps and saying, "that's why we want to close the borders." They were assuming they were Jamaican, which they might have been.
But, okay. No American born citizen ever abuses animals or people, no white person ever does this sort of thing, right. It's not about these specific individuals, it's about EVERYONE who looks like them, without exception, okay. By the way, the woman who saved the kitten had an accent like she was from Cuba or something, so I wanted to comment that it took a person who was probably also an immigrant to stop this thing (as others were witnessing it and videoing it as well), but I didn't comment because I don't want to get into a friggin' argument with jerks in the comment section.
Grr. People make me so mad.
