Excluding the Sandy Frank episodes, heres that top 4: Santa Claus Conquers the Martians Laserblast Diabolik Godzilla vs. Megalon I'm praying that you're right, because these eps (except Diabolik, really) ARE essentials. I'm not a fan of Godzilla vs. Megalon, but it's still a huge favorite with a majority of fans.

I say we keep our expectations low so that we can only be pleasantly surprised. I think MightyJack had a pretty good idea of what's going to happen. A repackaging of existing eps that have yet to be combined into a box set. Manos and Mitchell for sure. I'd also say Eegah! and maybe a new sci-fi ep just for the heck of it. Final Sacrifice perhaps.

You all say that Rhino picks cheap movies but they also picked a lot of episodes that weren't on Comedy Central for the last few years (Catalina Caper is a big one that was yanked off CC, Sidehackers is another) and Merlin's Shop which originally had rights issues. So they aren't completly lazy.
Also, it wouldn't bother me if the repackaged old episodes together just as long as it featured no more or no less extras. Most MSTies will have them, just as long as they put the other DVD's out of production I'll be fine.
BTW, Godzilla vs. Megalon is unlikely, while it was public domain the Godzilla trademark is owned by Toho Studios and I don't think they're doing to lease it to Rhino for begin mocked.

My suggestion to Rhino would please the fans as well as take some sting out of Rhino's pocketbook. If you are going to do the "Essentials" (which is a great idea by the way), you should take only the eps which are relevant in creating the course of the show. Such touchstone episodes have already been released, (Manos, etc.) but combine them with unreleased episodes as well, to make it worth our while to shell out more of our hard earned money. Here's my wet dream for "The Essentials": a 10 DVD pack including: 101: The Crawling Eye. Why: Historically Important. First Comedy Channel Episode. Pros: Rights should be relatively cheap, as I have it in a three pack of public domain videos. Cons: BBI is not particuarly proud of Season One episodes and may veto it. But The Crawling Hand got released, so who knows? 201: Rocketship XM: Why: Historically Important. First Kevin Murphy as Servo. First TV's Frank. Pros: Again, rights shouldn't be too bad, I have it in a three pack DVD of pd titles. Cons: Might be more expensive than I think. 424: Manos: Why: Fan Fave. Pros: Already in Rhino library. Cons: I know we already have it, but it IS Essential. 512: Mitchell: Why: Historically Important. Last Joel ep. Pros: Already in Rhino Library: Cons: Again, we got it, but it IS Essential. 513: The Brain That Wouldn't Die: Why: Historically important. First Mike ep. Pros: See Above. Cons: See Above. 624: Samson vs. The Vampire Women: Why: Historically Important. Last TV's Frank. Pros: Should be cheap to pick up, I've seen the stand alone DVD for less than five bucks. Cons: Not the best episode of season 6, but if its cheap enough for Rhino to pick up and it's the last Frank ep, then to quote Frank: "WHO ARE YOU TO JUDGE!" 706: Laserblast: Why: Historically Important. Last CC ep. Last Dr. F ep. Pros: I've seen the DVD for relatively cheap. Cons: the current rights holder may not give them up. 801: Revenge of the Creature: Why Historically Important. First Sci Fi Channel Ep. Pros: Picks up where Laserblast left off, you can't watch one without the other. Cons: Universal. They probably won't give up the rights. If that's the case, and I believe it will, Rhino can toss in Cave Dwellers in on us. Or why not premiere Gunslinger on DVD, and I'll be happy. 1001: Soultaker: Why: WHY? CUZ JOEL COMES BACK THAT'S WHY. Pros: Have seen this along with Future War on DVD for under five bucks in stand alone editions. Cons: Rights holders may not give them up. 1013: Diabolik: Why: Historically Important. Last Episode. Pros: Rhino has been doing more Sci Fi Channel eps as of late, so this might have a shot. Cons: A new DVD special edition is coming out this summer of the original release version so it may be too expensive for Rhino. If that's the case, give us Pod People. Again. Or go for the gusto and Re-Release the Amazing Colossal Man for god sakes. If any of you out there agree with me, then lets start a petition of something. I'd be happy to re-purchase SOME episodes in order to get some new unreleased episodes into my player. Let me know what you think.

Nice work Laserblast, although a 10 disc box would be kind of expensive and harder to sell. Reminds me of a thread I had some time back called Time Capsule Essentials.

I think that’s great for Rhino, but insulting to the fans like myself who have already “shelled out our hard earned money” on the episodes they have already released. My greatest worry about this set is that they will do something just like what you wrote. Release a set with some episodes that have been available for years and then a few new ones that any true MST3K fan can’t live without. That’s called “double dipping” and it shows a complete lack of regard for one's customers. OK, I’m done complaining about something that hasn’t even happened yet.

I think it would be cool if they put something out that I'd NEVER seen before, like "Danger! Death Ray!"
I would NOT be happy to see them throw in Manos or anything else that's available on DVD. I own them and would be pretty peeved if the only way I could get, say, that "Death Ray!" was to be forced to re-purchase Manos.
But then, it does seem Rhino takes a perverse joy in my suffering. So I wouldn't be surprised by anything at this point.

Now that I think about it, that's even worse than a simple repackaging. If they strictly repackage old episodes, I'm momentarily disappointed, but I don't waste any money. If they do this, I either buy something I already have, or I knowingly miss out.

Exactly. Companies do this sort of thing by releasing “bare-bones” editions of popular movies and then releasing the special super-duper editions of them a few months latter in the hopes that people will buy them twice. I’m hoping that Rhino isn’t going to try something similar.

They did that when they re-issued their "Monkees" boxset.
First they got rid of a few good songs, then replaced them with some bad "live" versions, a few of which are already on the set as studio recordings. HU?
I'm glad I bought the set when it was orginally released.
It goes without saying, that I'm often baffled by this company.

There's a lot of talk of them repackaging Manos in this thread ... to be perfectly honest, if they did that, but included the original verson of Manos, I would buy it.
