Exactly. Companies do this sort of thing by releasing “bare-bones” editions of popular movies and then releasing the special super-duper editions of them a few months latter in the hopes that people will buy them twice. I’m hoping that Rhino isn’t going to try something similar. Yes! This kind of thing is such BS! This has happened with a few dvd's I've bought over the last couple of years.

Wow, Gemini Man.
You double posted on a rant against companies double-dipping on DVD reviews.
That's irony.

Hey, I'm not going to be upset at ANYTHING they release. Hell, if you think about it, we're pretty damn lucky they release any MST3K at all. It's a niche show with a solid fanbase. I'm pretty sure they're not making they're living off MST3K sales. As long as it's a decent product, whether I have the eps or nay, I'll still buy it just so they'll keep the releases up.
Hey, beggars can't be choosers my dear friends.

And these guys invested a LOT of work, time and MONEY to get this set out. I'm sorry TS69, but If Rhino thinks I'm just going to bend over and, in the words of "Oingo Boingo", Take it and like it then to hell with them. Not when there are companies doing a better job with similar product. They release new stuff I'll be happy. But if they EVER mix new with old. No, goodbye, MJ don't play that! It's one thing to be grateful, it's another to accept something unacceptable (which a repackaging would be) I worked hard to earn my money. Rhino needs to put in the same effort if they expect me to shell out the dough. New episodes or I bolt!

Out of around 150 episodes, they should be able to secure the rights to enough movies to release new product only. There are likely unreleased episodes for which they already have the movie rights. Want to offer support with a "whatever they release I'll get" mentality? Do that with the folks who released "Reefer Madness" with Mike's commentary. I understand they have more releases due out in the near future; including the participation of Mike, Kevin and Bill. With enough MSTie support, who knows where this might go?

All of you make valid points, and yes I do agree, but my point is if you are doing a dvd series of ESSENTIAL episodes, there should be a 424 or 513 in there if not for the casual fan, but to honor the series itself. I agree, repackaging and rereleasing is the work of SATAN... FROM HELL, but i can see how my point was missed....

What you're saying makes sense to the title of the new release, and it may even make business sense, (though I doubt it,) but it certainly isn't what we want to see as loyal fans of the show, and most of us as loyal customers to Rhino. By definition of the word "essentials," your point is valid, but none of us need those episodes to be released again. I'd be much happier if they released King Dinosaur, Danger! Death Ray, The Brute Man, and The Final Sacrifice in a boxed set. It may not make sense to the title of the release, but who cares? It's a good purchase. That's all I'm concerned about.

Too true. Most fans of the show already have Manos, Mitchell and what have you. To repackage those movies in with say, War of the Colossal Beast and I was a Teenage Werewolf would be a pretty crapy thing to do, because then us loyal fans ( insanely loyal! would have to pay more for less. Good for Rhino, but man, bad for us. Of course, I would like to point out again that this hasn’t happened yet. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm curious as to why everyone is accusing Rhino of repackaging already-released titles. I've seen lots of rants about it, but no actual evidence that this will happen.

No one is accusing anyone of anything. Some people are worried that Rhino’s new MST3K box set titled “Essentials” may be a repackaging job. Just by the title alone it sounds like it is setting itself up to be a re-issue, but of course no one can be sure until we have the official announcement.

Yup, we're just "discussing" the possibility. That's what we do, speculate, kid around, swap opinions, spam the board with mindless drivel (thats "yousonuva" specific. LOL, J.K.) >>>>> And I get your point Laserblast, I just wouldn't like it.

Okay, more speculation: If it's all new, what would an "essentias" set have in it?
Taking into consideration that they have asked about the fans poll AND that they have said that future sets would not be sci-fi exclussive. I have a feeling we might see
"Santa Claus Conquers the Martians"
