ugh, it's in full frame 1.33:1 from the back cover... Um, no, 1958's House on Haunted Hill was originally 1.85:1 [/nitpick] Which reminds me.....for anyone out there who has both the Legend and other copies of Reefer Madness... Is it just me (or my video equipment) or does the Legend transfer actually have less of the picture on screen than others? Like they pulled in tighter on the picture? It's so annoying I only play the Legend version now when I'm too busy to watch the picture or can't be in the same room but can to listen to the audio.

That's really, really funny. The photoshop, that is.
I'm not a fan of that whole genre...horor... (eh, sue me) but given a Mike commentary track, I'd definitely consider renting it.

I got mine, watched it yesterday. I laughed really hard when Mike said "retired leprachaun" and all the jokes with that guy. But My beef is with the actual movie. Why weren't all the loose ends tied up at the end? It astounds me. We never get to find out if they make it out. Where was the blood on the ceiling coming from? How did the caretaker's wife roller blade like that without moving any part of her body? And how did those two pull of all those stunts? Nothing is explained.
But still it was an excellent commentary by Mike. Could not have enjoyed it more!

Couple of quotes from the disc review on DVD Savant... "Another colorized eyesore from Legend and Fox; William Castle's haunted house classic also includes an okay B&W version and a Mike Nelson comedy track." "Both versions can be watched with a comedy track by Mike Nelson of the old MST3K cable show. His running commentary boils down mostly to snide comments about the characters, all negative and basically there for cheap sex jokes, especially whenever Richard Long gets near Carolyn Craig."

I have this and Night of the Living Dead with the Mike Nelson commentary on them, and I'd have to say that he did a much better job with "House" than with "Night". I was laughing almost all the way through the "House" movie, and with "Night" it was only in parts. I'm hoping for more movies with Mike doing commentary on them. Oh, and the Three Stooges DVD with the gang on it was funny as well.

Yeah...."Night" he seemed too obsessed with trivia about the cast....which there's much better DVD's out there for that, if you care. BTW, I just realized that the actress who played Nora is the same one who played Cynthia in those "General Hospital" shorts (413- Manhunt In Space, 415- The Beatniks, 417- Crash Of The Moons). Speaking of useless trivia....

So which of the Legend films with Mike would you folks here like the best? I'm thinking about getting Plan 9 and maybe Carnival of Souls. Or is there another thread I should be asking this in?

So which of the Legend films with Mike would you folks here like the best? I'm thinking about getting Plan 9 and maybe Carnival of Souls. Or is there another thread I should be asking this in? I don't have Carnival of Souls yet so I can't comment on that. Reefer Madness - Not the most complete version of the movie I've ever seen. In fact, it's rather lousy compared to Something Weird Video's THC Triple Feature disc. And the short is plain stupid. Mike's commentary is the only thing to recommend it....and that's very good. Night of the Living Dead - Nice copy of the film. Mike seems to be detached from the proceedings. Spends a lot of time talking about the film careers of the actors (or lack there of) and drink recipes. When he does riff however, he connects more than misses. NOTE: DVD Aficinado says that this title is out of print. Don't know if that's true or not. House on Haunted Hill - Great copy of the film. Mike is very good on this one. He's riffing rather than commenting on the production or the actor's careers this time. I really enjoy this one. Plan 9 From Outer Space - I still can't believe the vertical white line in my copy of this "restored" movie in the "Inspector Clay is dead...murdered....and someone's responsible!" scene. Unless I have a defective DVD my only guess is that they were too occupied putting the name of the eBay auction winner on the tombstone to notice it. Mike is very funny. This is, however another example of why he should write with others. For every great riff there's something flying by unmentioned. How do you watch the opening of this and NOT mention how much Criswell looks like Max Headroom? The extras on this disc are great....even the Lost 8 Plans. IMHO, they're all cheap enough and have enough going for them to be worth the money. In the cases of Reefer Madness and Night of the Living Dead....if you're truly interested in these movies for themselves, there's better copies out there - no matter how much they say they've restored these films.

I've had it forever but I just watched "HoHH" last night. I agree w/ Wild Rebel that Mike does a really good job on the commentary. The print of the movie is excellent. I still wish Legend would pony up the bucks to add Kevin and/or Bill. I miss the interaction.

I don't know if you agree with me but in the case of HoHH it's more straight out riffing than he's done with other films. It's most like the old days. Maybe this is the first movie he's done (besides Reefer Madness) that he thought deserved the MST3K treatment?

In fact, the same could be said about Reefer Madness and Plan 9. While the others I've seen he seems restrained....like he has too much respect for them as films to hit them hard. Which really makes me wonder what his Carnival of Souls is like since that's considered a minor classic. Hell, there's actually a Criterion Collection edition of Carnival!
