Doubt it, I think it was just Rhino not caring. (See the Review site for me and Forrest's opinion of Rhino) But it makes you wonder now about Rhino's excuse for the slow release schedule being "exhaustively looking for film rights."
I guess now we know why they held out so long on releasing Giant Gila Monster. They were saving it for just such an occasion.

There are only a handful of truly PD movies left, I do think they've held off on releasing them until later or mixing them with licensed titles (like with Vol 12).

Here is the email I sent to Rhino just now:
Dear Rhino,
I have been a loyal customer of your company for a long time. The most interesting property you're working with now, in my book, is the Mystery Science Theater 3000 television show. After how wonderfully you handled the infamous 'killer shrews' glitch--my original disc was fine, but I've heard the replacements were prompt and friendly--I'm a little bewildered to hear that you might be re-releasing a box set with one different episode.
At this point in time, I've bought 12 MST3K box sets, 10 single episodes on dvd, a few on their initial VHS releases, and an essentials disc from you (which included a 'double dip' of "manos" which only slightly bothered me) for over $800. That shows loyalty to you as a company, as well as to the show itself.
Now, I understand this movie rights issue can be tricky business, so I totally understand the need to pull a disc from a set, and not let the other episodes go to waste. I'd be selfish to recommend that fans who weren't so lucky to snag a copy of Volume 10 before it was pulled from the shelves not get the change to see 3/4 of the set. That being said, it seems like incredibly bad business sense to punish good fans and loyal customers by producing a single episode--a classic one at that, "The Giant Gila Monster" is--without a way for your loyal customers and fans of the show to obtain the episode without having to rebuy three other episodes at 15 bucks a pop.
Allow me to suggest the following options for how to make this situation pleasant for everyone involved:
1. Release a single disc version of "The Giant Gila Monster". Instead of paying a designer and copy writer, you could even open up a contest for fans to produce art if that extra bit of penny pinching would help.
2. Release a second essentials set with a second 'new' episode. Maybe you could even model it after the previous essentials set and include "The Giant Gila Monster" and the season five "Santa Claus" episode.
3. Release a second essentials set with a 'double dip' episode. It's a much milder annoyance to have to pay an extra ten bucks for an episode we already have then 45 bucks for 3. Pull a fitting episode from the single disc releases or one of the boxsets, pop it on as disc two and, at the very least, lessen the financial burden of being a fan of a favorite show and loyal customer.
4. Release a second essentials set and make the second disc all bonus material and Best Brains made documentary/outtake material. People would be okay with this.
5. Sell the episode in a plain sleeve with MST3K Volume 10.2 Patch written on it for a fair price on your website so that we can tuck it into our original volume 10 sets.
While some of those options are a bit more wishful than others, all 5 appear to be reasonable ways that you can keep the MST3K fan base happy.
Thank you for your time.

No, I think two sets a year is pretty decent. I wouldn't expect more, and I certainly wouldn't expect less.

That one seems to the most likely. Single-disc releases for TV shows aren't as popular now as sets I think. For the shelf space of 3 single-discs you can have a whole season for 4 times the price of one.. or whatever. But offering the episode in a plain case online would work great (selling it through MST3k.com or whatever).

Can someone fill me in on the Killer Shrews problem? On Volume 7 there are some extra shorts, Assignment Venezuela which was never featured on the show, and the ones from the Sci-fi era. All were put on the Shrews disc instead of spreading them about and as such Rhino cut some of the episode, the opening voice-over of the film with riffs by the SOL crew. After an uproar Rhino promised to replace the discs with the uncut episode but it took ages for them to come out. I think mines was six months, and post wasn't to blame! Ah, okay.. I just watched mine yesterday and I seem to remember the voice over sequence at the beginning, so I must have a "fixed" one. Thanks for the info!

If Rhino doesn't release The Giant Gila Monster as a single for those that already bought Vol. 10, I'm not going to throw a tantrum. I'd prefer it, since I have Vol. 10 already, but it's not that big a deal to me. I'm not going to "boycott" anyone. Instead of looking at it as paying between $40 to $60 for Giant Gila Monster, I'll think of it as paying $40 to $60 for Godzilla vs. Megalon. Considering the prices on e-bay, I think it's a bargain.

Go ahead and re-release an album with extra tracks so I have to pay twice for my favorite band. I don't mind. What? The government wants to tax me for air? That's okay, I've been getting it for free all these years."

I'm sorry you feel that way. I'm also sorry you feel the need to be insulting just because I don't feel the same sense of outrage as you. Maybe this whole "being sorry" attitude is why you think it's okay for companies to screw people over with re-releases with a few extras. Are we consumers? Yes, but that doesn't mean that we have to put up with this kind of crap. I am hopeful that Rhino will be able to remedy the situation, but if enough people like you tuck their tails between their legs and roll over, they might not see the need.
