I got the DVD early today.
If anybody is wondering, this truly is a barebones release as you've read about. No secret extras/easter eggs.
No option for the original 2.0 soundtrack for English speakers either. Just the 5.1 mix. The movie's colors are slightly different in this release as well.

The movie's colors are slightly different in this release as well. Could you (or someone) post image comparison pics?

I'm not an expert on aspect ratios so I may be wrong, but based on those images, it looks like the image of the new DVD was matted to 1.85:1 (which was the original theatrical ratio), while the old DVD was opened to 1.78:1. So while the new DVD may have less information on the top and bottom, it's actually closer to the original intended theatrical ratio. Again, I might be totally off; that's just my opinion based on what I know about varying ratios. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

i32.tinypic.com/2cffkhc.jpgShould be noted that in the pan-and-scan version of the movie Trace's head can be seen under Crow in that shot.

Apparently Mike's chin was too large to fit in the new version.

Got the DVD today. Haven't watched the whole movie yet but I checked it out. No extras (when it was announced weren't we supposed to get a trailer?), but it has subtitles for the hearing impared. If you've got a deaf friend who's never been able to enjoy MST3K now is your chance. But what did suprise me was how nifty the packaging is! The font on the planet logo has been changed from the preview image to a slightly-more-like-the-original and generally classier font and the label has a shiny foil finish which makes it striking. The back cover has a (shiny) black-and-white image of Exoder fighting the Mutant. Oh, and there are chapters but no chapter menu. You'll have to turn on the movie and then push the next chapter button a few times if you want to get to a particular scene.

I didn't see the trailer on there either. And my DVD player is saying this disc is dual-layered. Looks like they wasted a ton of space.
The gaffe where Trace's hand can be seen flapping wildly underneath Crow in Servo's bedroom segment is now barely visible with the new crop, but you can still see a little of his hand.
Finally a MST3K release has subtitles. A first I believe.

Sub-titles on a MST3K piece? Do they just have the original movie's lines? Or the lines with "riffs" added in another color or something?

Wow, thanks much for all of the image comparison pics and ratio info.
...and EXCELLENT news about the subtitles! Not so excellent about no chapter menu...it's 2008 for f***'s sake, even a 10-year old can make a decent one these days. *sigh*

Sub-titles on a MST3K piece? Do they just have the original movie's lines? Or the lines with "riffs" added in another color or something? All the subtitles are the same color. The riffs are pointed out by having Mike:, Crow:, and Servo: next to the line.
