Rhino has released another Mystery Science Theater 3000 set. It is great! They have picked great episodes for this volume! They are: Monster A-Go-Go, The Phantom Planet, The Dead Talk Back, and the classic Hobgoblins! Dissapontingly, there are no special features on this set, but that doesn't matter too much. Here are my reviews on each episode.
Episode #907: Hobgoblins
Hobgoblins is probably the best episode in the whole set. Why you may ask? It's the best because it seems like the movie was made for the show! Horrible acting, lame story, bad editing, terrible special fx, and very sleazy. I couldn't believe that adults actually made this crap! Anyway, about the movie, the movie's about 5 young people who are "terrorized" by little fake looking creatures called Hobgoblins. The Hobgoblins grant you your fantasy and kill you in the process. The women in the movie are all depicted as sex-craved sluts. (Made me kind of steamed.) The men are depicted as sex-craved nerds and jerks.
The riffing in this episode was great! So many great lines throughout the episode! And the host segments were very funny also! An A+ episode!
Episode #902: The Phantom Planet
This was a pretty good episode not great like Hobgoblins, but it was enjoyable! The movie was very boring and lame. It's about a guy and his cheesy dramatic speech partner who are exploring space. Until a piece of the ship gets ripped off and they have to go out and fix it. The main guy's partner dies by floating out in to the black abyss of space after he just rescued him and he does nothing to try and save him! Then he crash lands on an asteroid that's the home of small alien people. He shrinks to teir size and is recruited to fight their enemies, these weird dog-like aliens. After that, a friend of his helps him get back to his regular size and he is rescued by a rescue team looking for him. The riffing was okay and the host segments were forgettable. A great stinger though of the main characters bud giving a cheesy speech. A B+ episode.
Episode #421: Monster A-Go-Go (with short: Circus On Ice)
A very, very bad movie about an astronaut who explores space and crash lands to earth as an ugly strange mutant beast! And the short was very stupid about a, well..... Circus On Ice!! Excellent riffing on movie and short makes this a very enjoyable episode to watch! The host segments are very funny too! Espescially the invention exchange about Joel and the Mads creating action figures! A great highlight from the golden years of MST3K! An A+ episode.
Episode #603: The Dead Talk Back (with short: The Selling Wizard)
A very enjoyable, fun episode to watch! A good episode to watch late at night, just because it has that feel to it! The short is about an atractive woman who's supposed to be a wizard teaching you about the art of selling freezers and the science of them. Dissapointing riffing on the short, but it doesn't hurt the episode too bad. Now we get to the movie! The movie has an interesting plot to it about a very nerdy scientist who has created a machine that communicates with the dead. (Or so we think.) He uses it to contact a woman who was killed by a murderer with a cross bow! Then the movie just goes on about a detective trying to figure out the murder by using his "great" interigation on the suspects. At the end , all the suspects and the detective join the nerdy scientist in his basement to find out who killed the woman. After they talk to the dead woman, she gets up and is alive! This causes one of the suspects to spill his guts and they find out that he killed the woman. The woman is also actually a different woman! So the title of the movie was pointless! Great riffing and great host segments! Including Tom and Crows talk show about talking to the dead! And my favorite one about the guys making fun of the Grateful Dead's long guitar solos! An A episode!
The artwork on the case and discs is very cool and creative. It has good soung and good menus. The only problem with this set is the weird glitches in the Dead Talk Back disc. This set also has all the great selection of certain type of B-movies! Like Hobgoblins, it's one of those intentionally-cheesy-but-ends-up-being-very-stupid-and-sleazy b-movie. The Phantom Planet is one of those cheesy 50's sci-fi b-movie. Monster A-Go-Go is one of those campy b-movies. And The Dead Talk Back is one of those small town drive in theater 50's type b-movie. You see, this set has it all!
