Welcome to my Season 6 Reviews Thread.
I would love to start my own MST3K Review site someday and tell it like it is like the big boys do. Your comments are appreciated and if you want to see more of my reviews you can check out the MST3K Group I belong to on Myspace.
Without further adu here's the first batch of reviews:
601--- Girls Town
Season 6 gets off to an interesting start as Dr. Forrester announces the "umbilicus" project which is to connect Gypsy's "pipe" to Deep 13. The Mads then notice they need an adapter cause Gypsy has a "male" end. EWWW!! I hate when people call it that!! And what does that tell us about Gypsy?!
Movie was dramatic like a typical 50's teen exploitation flick. Had an all-star cast too. There was Mamie Van Doren, Mel Torme, Paul Anka, The Platters and that DUDE from 307---DADDY-O.
It was odd for several reasons: Mel Torme played a tough guy (HUH?!); Mamie kept speaking in this 50's slang that got annoying. Paul Anka, although his charactor was the good Catholic-type in the beginning, later told of his tough upbringing and how at age 14 he and his gang stole $40 from a pool hall (HUH?!); and there was also this CRAZY girl at the GirlsTown school that was obsessed with Paul Anka and tried to kill herself. Lots of riffing on her.
Mike and the Bots, on several occasions, referred to Mamie Van Doren's behind as "Gigantor!". Speaking of Mamie... her character was a real bitch throughout. I was actually hoping someone would put her in her place. Then on arrival at the GirlsTown school she gets beaten-up by a girl that knows JuJitsu/Judo. Then later gets roughed up by other girls. I actually felt bad for her.
Funny scene was the drag race/chicken one. "Are they driving with their crotches?" askes the Bots. Goof as an obvious dummy is used when a car runs up an embankment.
GREEK References: During the "umbilicus" Dr. Forrester mentions the Geosphere. "Geo" comes from the Greek word "Yee" meaning Earth. He also mentions Homer; pronounced Omer in Greek. And in an odd scene: while Paul Anka is playing his piano and singing (what else?) a sad love song, he gets to the words, "I'm such a lonely boy. Lonely and blue." And Crow says, "A Greek not a Jew!" HUH?! This is confusing cause I just checked IMDB and Paul Anka is of Lebanese deceant. HMMMM...
MOVIE reference: "Tom Stewart killed me!" from 414--- Tormented.
Host Segments were good. Tom couldn't stop scatting in the first one. And in the second one Tom ate all the candy bars.
Plenty of riffs to choose from like a Benny Hill reference and a crack on DADDY-O getting "fresh". But the riff I decided to share was:
Riff: "Please. That's where my Velvet Fog eminates from!"
(B) 3.3 out of 5.
602---Invasion U.S.A. with short "A Date With Your Family."
Short was one I was familiar with. I have seen it a few times on Shorts Volume 1. Very funny! Still can't get enough of how cheesy it is and Mike and the Bots do an incredible job riffing it to shreds. Which it deserves for incouraging people to be fake. Some of my favorite riffs include: "Mom... I'm pregnant."
"I had a feeling today."
"Dad, I'm dating a Negro."
"A fight broke out over who's day was more pleasant!"
By the way, notice how they say boys should be incouraged to do their homework while women should just change their clothes to look good and set the table for dinner. One of the best Shorts MST3K has. (A) 4.4 out of 5.
Movie itself was a Propaganda film from the 1950's. I checked Don's MST3K site the night before viewing and read the first few lines. Soon as I read that hypnosis was involved I figured it would all be just a dream. And, ofcourse, it was. Still there was intense moments where places were being bombed, thanks to stock footage, which, this movie had plenty of. Relationships were started up and ended. People died left and right, yet, Mike and The Bots riffed it up.
Beginning of the episode Mike was building a robot that, unfortunately, wanted to destroy Crow and Tom. Funny. Host Segments were okay. The first one had Mike and all 3 Bots sitting to dinner and trying to have a vague, yet, pleasant conversation. Then Gypsy says, "Mike, THIS SUCKS!" Then they eat like pigs. In the Final Segment Tom tells Mike he doesn't know what to believe anymore. So he believes he is dreaming and asks Mike to hit him with a Big mallot. Funny stuff! Crow gets nicked accidentally.
This was a pretty good episode, mostly, because of the excellent Short and okay Host Segments. If I had to grade just the movie portion of the episode it would be around a 2 out of 5. Riffs were just okay; very few memorable ones.
Interesting note: During the movie the USA Military, in order to find out whom were spies, asked if they knew how the Chicago Cubs did. This reminded me of Episode 109---Project Moonbase when they kept talking about the BROOKLYN DODGERS!
GREEK reference: Hypno again. From EEp-no meaning sleep. Since I mentioned that one twice before, here's a few other words. Kre-VAH-tee = bed; Ma-xee-LAH-ree = pillow; se-DOH-nee = sheet; Koor-VE-tah = blanket.
Stinger: I actually guessed it correctly which is rare. I wont tell you what it was. You'll just have to watch and see. But it is kinda obvious. Mike: "Now that's how you do a walk-on."
Okay riff: "His helmet is ribbed for her pleasure."
(B-) 3.2 out of 5.
NOTE: 603---The Dead Talk Back with short "The Selling Wizard" has been skipped because I don't have MST3K Volume 8 yet.
604---Zombie Nightmare
This was one of the episodes I couldn't wait to see from Season 6. As a teenager I saw Wayne's World 1 & 2 and thought Tia Carrere was hot!! Having said that, let me just say this:
THIS MOVIE SUCKS!! My God, what a bad movie! It had everything going against it. Low budget, bad acting, bad writing, bad directing, bad ending cause it didn't make a lot of sense! But atleast Tia was in it... right?
Basically this is a cheap zombie movie. Some kid's father dies saving a Voodoo priestess from 2 neighberhood punks. Then as an adult that same kid gets run over by a car full of 5 teenagers. The kid's mother gets that same priestess to do her Voodoo on her son. He comes back to life and gets revenge.
The police in this film are kind of stupid and all in all inept. Adam West plays the Police Captain and doesn't seem to care a lot about anything. Mike and the Bots tell several jokes/insults at Adam's expense. At one point Mike points out that Adam was paid scale because he really wanted to work with this director.
Hosts Segments were okay. In the first one Crow gets run over by Tom (while Tom was in his car out cruisin'). I thought this was going to end up turning Crow into a zombie that hunts down Tom, but it didn't. In the Final Host Segment we see Mike and the Bots writing letters to Adam West and apologizing for being so hard on him during the movie. The episode was a bit dissapointing for me. Mike and the Bot started out great then riffing dropped a bit in the second half.
Good riff:(Mother talking to her soon-to-be-zombie son) "Honey, cover up your nipples. The neighbors have been complaining."
(C) 2.3 out of 5.
605---Colossus and the Headhunters
This was barely an okay episode. Story was hard to follow and the riffs were okay, yet sporadic. This is basically a Hercules-knockoff. Lots of fight scenes that Mike and the Bots hated. It was difficult at times to tell the 2 tribes apart.
Host Segments were okay. There was this puppy the MADS created named "Nummy Muffin Coocol Butter" that everybody loved. Especially Frank who treated us to a song in Host Segment #1. The other ones were continuation of the love for the puppy.
GREEK references: There were plenty of references here and there. For instance, in the beginning Mike says: "Colossus; the story of a Greek immigrant..." and things like that. Also Baklava got mentioned. At one point the Bots mention, "...Kappa Delts." It's actually Delta (the one that looks like a triangle). If you really want to get technical it is pronounced Thelta ("TH" as in the, then, there, etc).
Movie reference: "Watch out for Snakes!" from 506---EEGAH. Always a favorite! Also a Saturday Night Live classic, "Two wild and crazy guys!"
At one point in the movie two guys are fighting and Mike and the Bots say, "And Bobby 'the Brain' Heenan has Wahoo McDaniels in a headlock!" I like wrestling references. Although... it would be more likely for McDaniels to have Heenan in a headlock. Just saying...
Good riff: "He's sucking in his gut worse than Hasselhoff."
