[glow=red,2,300]Review - #701 (TD) Night Of The Blood Beast[/glow]
This was the very first episode I ever watched, and by, am I glad I did! This was what got me into MST3K, and I never looked back!
[glow=red,2,300]OPENING:[/glow] Mike and the 'Bots say Happy Thanksgving, and talk about the game that was on. In typical MST3K style, the whole thing gets out of hand, and no-one will shut up about 'the game'.
[glow=red,2,300]OPENING OPINION:[/glow] The typical thing that mant MST3K openings were made out of, but done in such a charming and funny style that you just have to laugh. And poor old Gypsy trying to figure out what game they're talking about is hilarious. "Basketball?...Speedball?..."
[glow=red,2,300]INTRO:[/glow] Still talking about the game, while Dr. Forrester and his mother try to find a movie during a Thanksgiving party with guests TV's Frank invited before he departed for Second Banana Heaven, while Pearl talks with Crow, who she refers to as 'Art', for some reason.
[glow=red,2,300]INTRO OPINION:[/glow] Very notable for being one of the few episodes with Deep 13 being so lively. Mary Jo Pehl does an absolutely fantastic job as the always-prepared, mixed-feelings-towards-her-son mother. Another thing nicely touched upon is the apparence that Dr. F seems to be struggling somewhat without Frank. A very strong intro to Season 7.
[glow=red,2,300]HOST SEGMENT 1:[/glow] Stuffing Vs. Potatoes! Who will win, and have the privelege of being on Mike's order list?!
[glow=red,2,300]HOST SEGMENT 1 OPINION:[/glow] Very well done. Trace Beaulieu (Crow) and Kevin Murphy (Tom Servo) do excellently in the whole 'fight-cum-news-show' feel, with plenty of humming and quick-minded lines. Crow screaming "Aaaaah!" while Servo says, "Potatoes watch helplessly as man is beaten to death!" gets me every time.
[glow=red,2,300]HOST SEGMENT 2:[/glow] 'Art' and Pearl chat about Dr. Forrester, while a drunken Jack Perkins announces his love for a certain Mr. 'B.' Natural.
[glow=red,2,300]HOST SEGMENT 2 OPINION:[/glow] Very well written, and gives us a good insight into just how Pearl feels about her son. Crow's "Kill him. That's what I'd do." would be advice that Pearl would adhere to later in the future...Bridget Jones and Michael Nelson do great jobs as Perkins and Natural. Bridget really suits the role.
[glow=red,2,300]HOST SEGMENT 3:[/glow] Thanksgiving dinner inally commences, with everyone giving their thanks to God.
[glow=red,2,300]HOST SEGMENT 3 OPINION:[/glow] Hilarious. The 'thanks to God' are incredibly funny, and Kevin Murphy is brilliant as Kitten With A Whip. "I'm just thankful...no-one's checked the chickpeas!" Trace always did a good job of looking depressed after Pearl said something about him, too.
[glow=red,2,300]ENDING:[/glow] Tom Servo is Mincemeat, while Deep 13's guests appear to have taken a turn for the worse...
[glow=red,2,300]ENDING OPINION:[/glow] A better ending would have been impossible. Jack Perkins is just like his The Mystery Science Theater Hour self, which is a nice homage. Plus the news Mom's staying seems to shock Dr. F quite a bit. And with "Mother, will you kill him or shall I?", Season 7 begins.
[glow=red,2,300]SHORT - ONCE UPON A HONEYMOON - OPINION:[/glow] I've always thought of this short as bit different to most other MST3K shorts. Whereas many others were life lessons or tips, this just seemed to be a 20-minute musical about some angel mis-fit named 'Wilbur' (aren't they all?) helping out some chain-smoking music writer and his commercial-product obsessed wife have a honeymoon. Easily forgettable.
[glow=red,2,300]THE ACTUAL MOVIE - OPINION:[/glow] Laughably bad - your standard 50's black-and-white "horror" with clueless actors, a monster who is clearly some guy dressed in a rotten duvet someone dumped, and it's hard to actually know anyone's name in the movie - as Mike and the 'Bots often mentioned, everyone seems to be called Steve! Not that it really matters - by that time you will have stopped caring about the movie and just laughing at thhe fantastic riffing - which leads me nicely on to...
[glow=red,2,300]RIFFING - OPINION:[/glow] "Steve." "Hi Steve." "Hard to trust a guy not named 'Steve'." "Steve; that you?" Just a few of the Steve riffs that had me laughing my lungs out. The riffing in this episode was clearly some of the best in the whole series. "Before this century is out, we will put a man in a pick-up truck and drive him safely to Minnesito county!" "Back when NASA was a family company!" "Who's 'Dave'?"
[glow=red,2,300]STINGER:[/glow] "Wounded animal that large isn't good..."
So, what do you guys think?
