If you've never heard of Mike Leigh or seen any of his films, I highly recommend you check them out.
"Life Is Sweet" is one of my fav films of all-time. Just a beautiful "slice of life" story with a wonderful comedic performance by Leigh regular Timothy Spall.
All of his films are worth a look though IMO.

Secrets and Lies was one of the best movies of the 90s. There's a good reason it was nominated for Best Picture.

I liked Life is Sweet & Secrets & Lies.
I voted All or Nothing, that movie was soooo heartbreaking. Actually it has been 2 years since I have seen it and now just thinking about it makes me feel sad. It was a very powerful movie, very bleak.

Man, this was really hard. I've seen all the movies listed (and actually own most of them too) except for Nuts In May, which I'm planning to buy on DVD soon. In the end I voted for Life Is Sweet, because you gotta love Aubrey with his pineapple and Jane Horrocks as the bulimic Nicola. But it was a toss-up between that and Naked, which I adore. David Thewlis is fantastic in that. And Vera Drake was great too! And so was Meantime, with Tim Roth as the slightly retarded kid and Gary Oldman as the skinhead! And High Hopes, with the vaguely hippie-esque pair with the cactus named after Margaret Thatcher! Man, all his movies are good. Actually, one that wasn't listed that I like a lot too is Kiss of Death, which I think was made for television. It's about a guy who works in a mortuary.

My wife and I just saw "Career Girls" last night. That one is great, too.

Did you know that Katrin Cartlidge from Career Girls (she was in Naked too, playing the goth/punk chick) passed away in 2002? She had pneumonia I think. That made me really sad.

I thought I might mention that Naked is getting the Criterion Collection super duper treatment, 2 discs and all.
Speaking of Naked, I saw it for the first time last night on HBO. If Mike Leigh has a film better than that, than he is one of the greatest directors still around today, maybe ever. It remined me of a realistic Clockwork Orange. Anywho, I'm going to vote for it even though this is the only film of his i've seen.
Maybe forrest should see it sometime.

I thought I might mention that Naked is getting the Criterion Collection super duper treatment, 2 discs and all. Oh, that rules! Actually I only have Naked on VHS, so maybe I'll invest in the super-duper ultra special DVD... You should definitely check out some of his other movies if you haven't seen 'em. I think they're some of the most realistic, moving films ever made. Some of them are really funny (like Life Is Sweet and High Hopes), but a lot of them have a more downbeat, documentary-type feel to them. I'd recommend any of his films unreservedly -- newer ones Vera Drake and All or Nothing are fantastic, but his older ones are just as good, IMO.
