Maybe it's just my nostalgia talking. The old Wonka film is one of my all-time favorites. The new one was HORRIBLE. Oh God, here we go. People, for the last time, stop comparing this movie to the old one. Stop comparing Wonka to Michael Jackson. First of all, the old movie is one of my favs. But you completely stop the comparison with the two about 3 minutes into the new one. Also, the old movie was basically a propaganda film for the candy. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Some of you are just going to hate it on principle. I know, I'm a Gene Wilder mark too. But, you can't hate it purely based on that. And, it didn't "F up the original" and it's not a "horrid remake". A remake is when you put a new spin on something old. It didn't do that. It was an adaptive film representation of the book. Now, if you can give me some reasons as to why you hate it so much Forrest besides, "it's not the original", then, sure. But, just because you didn't care for a song in it, or, you wanted Wilder to be there just isn't justification. I mean, did you even give it a chance or had you judged it before you saw it? A diehard Wonka fan, Servo

No, I started disliking it in the opening credits with the CGI wonka bars and the Mars Attacks music. LOL, well, that's my Forrest. Servo

My problem is, in the new one, I didn't believe anything. In the old one I believed what was going on. I think the old one had better actors and characters too. The characters in this one were bland. And the Wonka backstory totally ruined it (Ha! Phantom Krankor! have I mentioned that!) So, let me get this straight, a movie, about a giant candy factory run by a nutty guy in a suit and some midgets is supposed to be believable? Yeah, the actors were better in the old one, but, I've already gone over making that comparison. And, how exactly did the backstory ruin it? If anything it reinforced why the character was the way he was. Servo

Yeah, but the original version, as much as I love it, was made to pimp candy.
They didn't give a damn about the story, really. And, who gives a rats ass about the Grinch. It was a cartoon originally. And everyone knows that making cartoons live action sucks balls. The book explains Oompa Land and such. Hell, the first movie does that. Yeah, mystery is great, but, would you have truly loved it had it been just an updated remake of the original?
Nah, you would've all still bitched because it wasn't the original.

Well, neither of us are going to come up with any new arguments, so, let's just, as we have done in the past, just agree to disagree on this one.
But, let's harass all those others who will surely disagree with both of us!
Servo
PS I know that. I'm not 8. The book was cartoonish though, not real-lifeish.

The biggest problem with this movie is that it didn't need to be done. I saw about half, didn't love or hate it, but got kinda bored since it's pretty much the same thing that it ever was, except with crappy music and might-as-well-be-going-to-commercial-break flashbacks. So in that regard it was worse, but overall it was the same exact story.

M<y sister asked me yesterday if I wanted to see it with her and my Dad. I said no way, it's gonna suck. She was like, No way! So I said bye and then she came back and said it was not what she expected, and I'm glad I didn't waste my money.

sucks ass. Tim Burton needs to stop doing remakes. Seriously. I really wish movies would stop trying to ruin classic characters by "explaining" how they got a certain way. The new Wonka movie was much closer to the book, but the rapping Oompa Loompas, the back story behind Willy Wonka, and just the hollow feel of the film really ****ed it up. It reminded me of The Grinch, with the pointless back stories that explain how a characters, bland child actors, and Hollywoodized style. Terrible. Movies these days are not about people, but situations. Depp is a great actor, but this is once of his worst performances. Gene Wilder made a much better Willy Wonka. Maybe it's just my nostalgia talking. The old Wonka film is one of my all-time favorites. The new one was HORRIBLE. Besides, what is Tim Burton's problem with not including the title character. "Batman" should have been called "Jack Nicholson", "Batman Returns" should have been called "Danny DeVito", and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factroy" should be called "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory". What a piece of crap. I hate Hollywood. I haven't seen this yet, but haven't really enjoyed one of Tim's films in a long time. I thought "Big Fish" was a bit ho-hum (didn't move me) and "Planet of the Apes" was just crap. I'll check it out soon--just to see the great Johhny D.

My father and brother once invited me to see Jerry Bruckheimer's "National Treasure" with them. I turned them down, and they got all pissed at me, I never heard the end of it, but I am still glad I didn't go. A long time ago I had a girlfriend that wanted to go see Pearl Harbor and I told her no, and I never heard the end of that either. I skipped both of those as well. Actually when we first saw the trailer for National Treasure, my wife, stepson and I just burst into laughter--it looked so ludicrous. Several people around us looked pissed, but screw em! If that's their idea of a good movie there's no hope....

I enjoyed it. I freed myself from the original by not comparing it to the original. I liked it a lot, but the new Oompa-Loompa songs blew because you couldn't understand a single word they said. But the important part is that I finally found the major vice of the chewing gum girl that eluded me in the other movie, since chewing gum is not really a classic vice. He vice was being too competitive.
Now I'm going to catch hell for saying I liked the movie, but I still agree that it was about 50% the original.

And with that, me and Night were finally in agreeance about something. So, just go ahead, and shut down the board, because fate is not going to allow things like this to happen without swift and violent consequences. Servo
