My love of movies is dead. Besides an occasional blockbuster (the last one being Revenge of the Sith), I don't go to the theater anymore. I don't rent. I rarely buy. I have all the Starz! channels, plus IFC & Sundance, but rarely tune in to anything even they have to offer. I just pay-per-viewed "The Life Aquatic" the other night and got NOTHING from it!
I am ready to QUIT movies. Period.
That's where you come in.
It's obvious that you are people with brains who choose to use them. It's obvious by this sub-section that movies are something you care about. That is why I am asking you, gentle reader, to recommend the ONE movie that makes a movie lover out of you. Why would be a nice plus. Then, I will watch them in an attempt to regain what I have lost--appreciation for cinema. If you would like, I can even post the results. Normally, I am a BIG SNOB, but I am opening my mind to ANYTHING. It doesn't have to be "The Seventh Seal" (one of my personal faves.) If it's "Weekend at Bernie's," I may gouge my eyes out, but I'll at least TRY to watch it.
If there are others in the same boat as me, try these choices out, and post what you think about them as well!

I tend to get burned out on important, serious, classics because that's all I watch, since I normally hate the mindless, Hollywood dreck.
So when I get the blues, I'll throw in an easy-going, funny film that's still got style. Like "Bottle Rocket", "Blues Brothers", or even the recent "Ocean's Eleven" remake.
But if you want me to name "The ONE" movie that makes me a film lover, I've gotta go with "Casablanca". If that's too familiar, then "The Third Man" and "Glory" are worthy candidates.

There is this movie called Manos the hands of fate It's really good... it changed my life.
But seriously I'm kind of going through the same thing myself... I have not sat down and watched a real movie since March. I can't even sit through Midnight cowboy anymore (which is my favorite movie) I don't know, I think It's because I work at the PA station.. whenever I watch a real movie now I keep hearing things like pan, tilt, LIGHTS!, etc. It just gets to me after awhile. So I really don't know what to tell ya man.
Note: I said I have not watched a real movie since March... But I have been dragged to the theater by my friends a few times this year. But when I'm in the theater I just fall asleep, or I bring a book and try to read near any light I can find.
Yeah I'm hip.

Well, my friend I'm in the same position. I put my dislike of movies to having seen too many good films and a deficit of new good movies to see. Also to just the terrible place I'm at in my life but that's another story...
So what movies still move me so that I love movies?
Try these:
Andrei Tarkovsky: Mirror
Andrei Rublov
Stalker
(but I think you've seen those)
Robert Bresson (a lot of these have just been released by Criterion): Diary of a Country Priest, Au Hazard Balthazar (my personal fav), L Argent, and A Gentle Woman (my second fav)....
since neither of these two directors are like any other directors in the history of cinema they should at least surprise the jaded....

Watch Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory for an appetizer, then throw on Patton for a main course, and wash it all down with both Gremlins movies.
Hey, it helped me through the week.

I've gone through this phase myself, especially when I am drowning under the weight of my roommate's "preferences'.
A really good way out for me is actually to spend more time with my home library. After an extended wander through that, I'm ready for some flicks.
I go back to the silly movies that always connected with me, even as a kid. Goofy films like "The Goonies" or "Labyrinth", for instance. It wakes me back up to the fun I always had watching movies, and reminds me of when I would sit around with my dad and watch everything and anything and learn from films.
I also will plan fun "theme" nights for myself, like Rubber Monsters From Japan or Totally 80's night. Very honestly, plowing through my whole collection of MSTs has a tendency to put me back in the movie-viewing mode as well!
But my best method is actually the one you went for, Godo. I ask people to suggest ideas. Or I pop out an old favorite with a bunch of people and enjoy the group dynamic.
Always watch something that completely involves you, even excites and inspires you, or it will just add to your burnout. That may sound basic, but I know plenty of people (myself included) who have tried to cure a burnout by going for something "classic", or even "new but quality". Even if it is well-made and brillant, if it doesn't connect with you right away, it may just send you back down the burnout path. And in my opinion, nothing beats a good laugh.
But everyone else's suggestions sound good too. Wish you luck, my friend.

Because you love The Seventh Seal, have you also watched Ingmar Bergman's other movies? Such as Fanny and Alexander, The Virgin Spring, Wild Strawberries, Smiles of a Summer Night, etc., etc.
What other movies do you like?

Gee, Godo, why don't you see a few of the older, classic, zany comedies like Bringing Up Baby... or The Divorce of Lady X...or The Front Page (with Rosalind Russel)?
Great, creative writing with rapid-fire delivery. Try Adam's Rib, or, for later zaniness, It's A Mad, Mad World.
None of these are for deep thought, but are highly entertaining!

Watch Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory for an appetizer, then throw on Patton for a main course, and wash it all down with both Gremlins movies. Hey, it helped me through the week. Servo Posts like this, sir, are why you kick SO MUCH ASS! Patton Followed closely by: Glory, Gettysburg, the Original Blues Brothers, and Blazing Saddles. Another nice list. When I posted this yesterday, I couldn't remember which movie it was that shows up on Encore! every once in a while & I can pick up from any point in the movie & watch until the end. "Patton" is that film. That, to me, is a good indication of a great movie. Because you love The Seventh Seal, have you also watched Ingmar Bergman's other movies? Such as Fanny and Alexander, The Virgin Spring, Wild Strawberries, Smiles of a Summer Night, etc., etc. What other movies do you like? Start with LMD's list. If it's foreign, I probably like it. Flesh the list out with alot of what Forrest is always writing about (Kubrick, Kurosawa.) Add a few of Tim Burton's (I can already hear some of you groaning. Whatever.) more sentimental films, like "Ed Wood" or "Edward Scissorhands." Round out the list with some ROTFLMAO comedies, such as Mel Brooks' work, & you pretty much have my tastes in mind. Good recommendations all around, folks. I now have homework for my upcoming weekend.

I recommend some flawed masterpieces by Nic Roeg.
Performance Walkabout Don't Look Now The Man Who Fell To Earth Bad Timing
Adding to LMD's list, I'll also recommend Tarkovsky's "Solaris." Probably my favorite sci-fi film ever.

Anything laugh out loud funny. And I mean really funny not some imitation definitely not funny flick. I mean Airplane I and II, The Jerk, Old Abbott and Costello movies (the good ones, like Meet Frankenstein, Buck Privates, Naughty 90's), and of course any MST3K episode. Also big blockbusters that are absolutely hoaky and dumb, just full of action like Independence Day, I Robot, Armageddon, The Day After Tommorow, anything with tons of action where you dont have to think, just enjoy.

Anything laugh out loud funny. The Jerk.... One of the funniest films ever. Also one of Stanley Kubrick's fav films (he originally wanted Steve Martin to play Dr. Bill in "Eyes Wide Shut" in the 80s). "The new phone book's here! The new phone book's here!" "HE HATES THESE CANS...MORE CANS!!!"
