I love movies so very much. But after your wife mocked a few I like, I'm so not making recommendations.

If I know anything about Nerdgroupie, I know she'd recommend "This Is Spinal Tap". She thinks it's brilliant satire and a great musical. Your passion for film will come back with a vengeance if you pop in such a classic.

I love poop!ehead as a name for a dog. That was my nickname in high school, but for a DIFFERENT reason. (*inhales*) (*holds breath*) I was a BIG Steve Martin fan back then. As a matter of fact, "The Jerk" was on WGN or something this morning when I got home from work. My fave line from that is the....umm...."job" Patti was going to give him. The Airplane movies (just about ANYTHING Abrams/Zucker, actually) are also excellent. Shep's list looks like a REAL homework assignment. Have never seen anything by Nic Roeg.

I love movies so very much. But after your wife mocked a few I like, I'm so not making recommendations. That's my fault, sweetie. My snobbishness has, unfortunately, rubbed off on her. It's those damn books! Since she's been going to school, the pedant factor has been raised by a gagillion. That's why I don't get to watch "guilty pleasure" shows on TV anymore (Jackass, Viva la Bam, etc.) Let me guess...were they romantic comedies?

Try Mad Max, Labyrinth, and Army of Darkness. Another good list. This, plus Samp...excuse me...Dr. Atari's addition of Spinal Tap is actually getting me STOKED! I KNEW you guys wouldn't let me down!

A couple of Criterion titles that jump-started my love for film again:
Jean-Luc Godard's Band of Outsiders - rich nuances and Anna Karina...do you really need anything else?
By Brakhage: An Anthology - I really don't know what to say about this guy. His films are like visual rollercoasters. If you don't mind a combination of genius and pretension, then you're in for a very rewarding experience.
And you can't go wrong with the aforementioned Au Hasard Balthazar.
Did I mention that Band of Outsiders features Anna Karina??

I recommend some flawed masterpieces by Nic Roeg. Performance Walkabout Don't Look Now The Man Who Fell To Earth Bad Timing Adding to LMD's list, I'll also recommend Tarkovsky's "Solaris." Probably my favorite sci-fi film ever. Don't Look Now is great......I recommend that one.

Here are a few very cool movies, in no particular order:
Risky Business True Romance Repo Man The Big Lebowski True Stories
And if you want something really out there, check out 5000 Fingers of Dr. T, written by Dr. Seuss!

Since you like foreign movies, I'd recommend some movies by my favorite director Luis Bunuel. Belle de Jour, That Obscure Object of Desire, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, Viridiana, Exterminating Angel, and of course Un Chien Andalou are great movies. If you like experimental movies or even David Lynch movies this could be right up your alley, but be warned. Don't Look Now is great......I recommend that one. Nobody reveals character through sex like Nic Roeg. Pretty amazing stuf--his early films. It could also be said of Bunuel and another very good director Bernardo Bertolucci. If you've seen The Conformist, Last Tango in Paris, The Last Emperor, or especially his latest The Dreamers you know what I mean. All these movies are great.

If you're like me, and I know I am, DO WHAT I DO! Watch a movie every day in a cheap ripoff of Kevin Murphy's A Year at the Movies, but use old movies from TV or DVDs and then (eventuallY) start a website on it.

TV Guide occassionally prints lists of movies being shown that are classic or little know but very good. Maybe they have an archive section in TVguide.com

I just pay-per-viewed "The Life Aquatic" the other night and got NOTHING from it! Mrs. Shep and I finally saw this last night and did not like it either (although I've enjoyed other Wes Anderson films).
