This is one of those extremely rare occurrences where I felt the sequel was actually better than the original. In my opinion, James Cameron scored a bullseye with Aliens and created one of the best action/horror films ever made. I never get tired of watching it. This film is never boring even though it does have a long running time. What do you guys think?

Alien3 owns both.

I still think Aliens is better than all of them (It's actually one of my top 5 movies of all time.) but I have to say I really liked the third Aliens film. Critics seemed to hate it, but I really liked it and could care less what they think. Alien Resurrection was pretty lame, but the first three are fantastic.

Nothing against the other Alien films, but Alien3 was just so on edge. I found it to be the darkest, most suspensful film of the entire series.
I like Alien and Aliens, AVP in a monster mash sort of way, and Resurrection is hillarious, but Alien3 was a masterpiece in my eyes.

Can't beat the original for claustrophobic suspense. Pretty good cast, too.

I dunno to e honest. I love both films equally, but if I had to pick, I guess Aliens, simply because it was a good cast that fit well with the characters they played.

The first Alien is just an amazing movie - best in the theatrical cut, although the director's cut is interesting.
Aliens was one of the most fun movies to see in the theater, and is even better in the director's cut, but doesn't repeat that well, definitely not as well as the first film.
Alien3 I didn't like when it first came out, but it has grown on me. I like the "Extended Cut" best because the theatrical cut left some holes in the story (such as "what happened to the crazy guy in the hospital?")

I'll resurrect this thread to mention that I just watched Alien and Aliens this weekend, both with the director (and others) commentary. I hadn't seen Alien since the theatrical re-release on Halloween 2003 and I wasn't sure if it would hold up as a horror film after having seen it. I hadn't seen Aliens in about a year and a half either.
They both held up well for me, but the second movie retains the edge in my opinion. Alien was a classic movie, and Cameron's treatment of the sequel was possibly the only conceivable direction to go that could possibly not be inferior to the original. If it had tried to go for a horror movie approach, it would have been a simple retread. Even as an action movie, it could easily have devolved into simple cheesiness (a la Alien vs. Predator and more other movies than I can possibly recall), but fortunately it was basically controlled by a man who knew exactly what he was doing. James Cameron, in his prime, was the best director of all-out action movies in my opinion, and he really did his job well in this one, basically taking the original premise and amping everything up into frenetic action, while maintaining some of the creepiness of the original.
Overall, I prefer Aliens to the original as one of the all-time great sequels ever.
(Note: I had a good time at Alien vs. Predator even though it was pretty much a mindless action romp. Probably because it stole the Lovecraftian Antarctic setting.)

I really liked the original, and I remember being in 5th grade when it came out and hearing about it from one of my friends who had gone to see it with his parents. My mother actually took me to see it, and I thought it was really scary. I have also seen Aliens and Alien3 and liked them as well, but the original is my favorite.

I am convinced that I am the only person on this planet who really disliked the original. I found it boring IMO. The sequel wasn't that terrific but it had it's moments.

I loved them both. To me it's like comparing apples to oranges though. The only common thread is Ripley. Alien is a great sci-fi/thriller/horror...still love it. Aliens is a great sci-fi/Action...still love this one as well. I will agree that Aliens doesn't hold up as well though
Just my two cents
