I know I'd be pissing my pants and screaming my ass off if I was strapped to a chair at the table with those psychos! Never eat dinner with my family then.

For anyone who is interested, the original Haunting (the greatest horror movies ever made in my opinion) is on at 12:30 a.m. EST tonight on TCM. They've been showing films directed by Robert Wise all day because of his recent death. Nice! Great film. Shirley Jackson (author of the original novel) was a pretty terrific writer, too.

I've been thinking about this all last night because I really do love horror movies. So, in no particular order 1) Night of the Living Dead(original) 2)Nightmare on Elm Street(the first one) 3)Halloween(original) 4)The Exorcist 5)Psycho 6)Nosferatu 7)Dracula(1931) 8)Burnt Offerings(don't know if it's horror, but it was pretty creepy) 9)Demons 10)Tombs of the Blind Dead(a Spanish movie, and part of a series of Blind Dead movies; very spooky)

8)Burnt Offerings(don't know if it's horror, but it was pretty creepy) Just saw this recently and really enjoyed it. The ending freaked me out a little, even though I saw it coming.

I too find that last 20 minutes with her bellowing to be EXTREMELY obnoxious. That is the main reason I'm not a huge fan of the film, even though I think the rest of it is well done. The odd thing is, many people comaplin when characters in horror films scream constantly (like TCSM and Shelly Duvall in The Shining etc..) but it's REALISTIC. I know I'd be pissing my pants and screaming my ass off if I was strapped to a chair at the table with those psychos! I think the main problem people have is it being in an obnoxious manner. If it can be done in a way not to piss off the audience, but still be realistic, then cool, otherwise.....

I should have included "The Wicker Man" on my list.
I don't know if it's a true horror film, but I love it.

Wicker Man is an excellent movie, and I think it could qualify as a horror movie.

In no particular order:
1. Suspiria 2. The Haunting 3. The Shining 4. The Exorcist 5. The Wicker Man 6. Repulsion (this is kinda a horror movie) 7. Burnt Offerings 8. Eyes Without a Face 9. House by the Cemetery (Lucio Fulci) 10. Stir of Echoes
I'm sure I've left off a whole bunch. Oh yeah, like Night of the Living Dead and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Ooh, and The Other, that one's great. Those should definitely be on there. I didn't put Jaws because I guess I never really thought of that as a horror film -- it's more like an action blockbuster.

I'm sure it's supposed to be realistic, I'm sure I'd be spazzing and screaming too. But in the same respect I hope if I am being chased by a crazed psycho it's not being made into a movie. Sometimes reality isn't always the best answer for audiences. If I'm annoyed by part of a movie, I'm going to remember that.

Anyone see "Cabin Fever"? I liked the humor element in that. When I was about 17 we went to go see "It's Alive" (I think that's the name). There a part where someone opens a cabinet door and an owl or something flies out. My legs tensed up so badly they hurt, and my friend automatically went into his martial arts "defence stance" in his seat. That was FUNNY.

Cabin Fever and Wrong Turn are on HBO all the time, I think I actually watched them in the same night. Wrong Turn is totally a Deliverance kind of movie. Cabin Fever had quite the humor, I think the worst part was when the dude wanted to "play" with the chick, and mistook her flesh eating disease as something completely different.

Good list, ECC. Still need to see "House by the Cemetary" (I liked Fulci's "Zombie" a lot) and "Eyes Without A Face." "Repulsion" is a very spooky Polanski film. I've heard his "The Tenant" is good, too. Still need to see that.

With Halloween around the corner, this thread needs a new posting.
This is my Top-10-ish list of Horror Films, as it stands now (it has changed only a little since last year):
1. Psycho (1960) 2. Jaws (1975) 3. Alien (1979) 4. The Thing (1982) 5. The Innocents (1961) 6. The Exorcist (1973) 7. Halloween (1978) 8. The Shining (1980) 9. The Silence of the Lambs (1991) 10. Dawn of the Dead (1978) 11. The Haunting (1963)
BTW, I always watch at least one horror movie around Halloween, so I still need to pick what to watch this year. Any suggestions?

Well since most of you have already named some of my favorite movies ad nauseam, I only have two movies I would put in that have not been mentioned.
The 1986 version of The Fly is probably one of the greatest horror movies I think I'll ever see. Including the best bad-ending of a movie ever.
Also any of Val Lewton's horror movies of the 40's deserve mention.
