I've heard about the UK version, but never seen it. Wow, S.K. cut some pretty good stuff, especially in the first half as you mentioned.
The US version would be pretty hard to beat, though I'd love to see Kubrick's original ending where Ullman visits Wendy and Danny in the hospital (It'll never happen--Jan Harlan isn't sharing. LOL)

Yeah, the UK version really hurts the impact of the film - this doesn't really make sense why he made the cuts - if anything, European movie-goers are more likely to have a longer attention span than American movie-goers. Not true from my experience (the longer attention spans in Europe) I just wish he'd cut out or replaced the blood coming out of the elevator. I think that's the only truly lame image in all of Kubrick's oeuvre.

The blood coming out of the elevator was always one of the best and most memorable parts in the movie forme. Hey, it's better than hedge animals coming to life (in the King book) - or a guy driving a car through tunnels for hours I agree about hedge animals....(was one of them a hedgehog?) but there should have been lots more Scatman Crothers DRIVING to the hotel. And I believe this scene appears in Belgium version but was edited out for all other releases:

The UK version, in the first half, omits the psychiatrist scene.... LOL Man, I'll bet Anne Jackson (who played the doctor) was pissed! She didn't get along with Kubrick all that well anyway.
