What are your favorite casting choices that fell through?
A few of mine:
Steve Martin in "Eyes Wide Shut." Kubrick loved Martin's "The Jerk" and at one time envisioned "Eyes" as more of a black comedy.
Jack Webb and Kim Novack in "Animal House." Director John Landis' original choices to play Dean Wermer and his wife. This would have been freakin' hysterical. As good as John Vernon was as the Dean, it's not hard to see an angry, stiff Jack Webb saying, "Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, Son!"
Sidney Poitier in "Burn!" Brando originally wanted Sidney to portray the slave turned revolutionary leader. The non-actor they eventually used wasn't too good, and it would have been fun to see these two legends play off of one another in a very interesting film.

I remember hearing that Jim Carrey's role in the Cable Guy was originally written for Chris Farley. I don't know why, but I can imagine the film being much better had this happened.

I've got one that still haunts me to this day.
"Forrest Gump" starring Bill Murray and directed by Terry Gilliam. It almost happened.
It would have made that existential treacle watchable.

From my Halloween Trivia, Lon Cheney as Dracula. Nice! And that reminds me, Peter Cushing was John Carpenter's first choice to play Dr. Loomis in the original "Halloween."

In Ghostbuster, John Belushi was going to be Peter Venkman, John Candy was going to be Louis Tully, and Eddie Murphy was going to be Winston.

"Trading Places" was supposed to be another Gene Wilder/Richard Pryor vehicle.
"Spies Like Us" was written following the success of "Blues Brothers" for Ayckroyd & Belushi. Later in development, Belushi's part went to Joe Piscopo. Finally, Chevy Chase signed on.
And as most everyone knows, Eric Stoltz filmed a couple weeks as Marty McFly on the original "Back to the Future" before being replaced by Michael J. Fox.

The Matrix was going to have Will Smith play Neo but he backed out to star in Wild, Wild West because he thought that it had a better chance of succeeding. I wish that I was joking.

Nice! And that reminds me, Peter Cushing was John Carpenter's first choice to play Dr. Loomis in the original "Halloween." That would've made me sad. And then I'd get over it. But I really like Donald Pleasance as Sam Loomis.

Was it Peter Cushing or was it Christopher Lee? I know at one point Carpenter mentioned Lee, but don't know if Lee was first choice or not.

Actually, it was both of them. However, Lee went up to Carpenter once and said it was the biggest mistake he has ever made in his carrer.

Speaking of Lee and Cushing, Lee also originally wanted his old friend to play the lead (the police officer) in "The Wicker Man."

I didn't know that. I really liked "Wicker Man." I think it's really a great movie.
