You'll have to excuse me if this is already a thread somewhere. I watched Star Wars III for the second time yesterday and it dawned on me: I don't get the whole war thing. Maybe because I'm trying to compare it to the "war" I'm in now, but I'm not following it. Please help me understand why there was a war in Star Wars. If Palpatine was in charge of both sides in the Clone Wars, why have a war in the first place? And even though they're clones, why would they knowingly go into battles where they could die when they're pointlessly fighting robots who are controled by the same leader as the clones? Why did the fighting begin in the first place? I know it had something to do with Naboo, but that's where I'm lost. The Trade Federation had some kind of embargo which turned into a hostile take over or something? We have a trade embargo with Cuba, but that doesn't mean we're going to invade. And the Galactic Republic is supposed to be so much more enlightened and technologically advanced than we are. I know the series is called Star Wars, but it could just as easily be called Star Stuff, or Star Things Happen for Some Reason. Please, help me understand the whole plot!!!!

Sorry, the thread is supposed to read I don't get Star Wars, but I just responded to the superman movie thread, and got distracted by something. My bad.

Yep. All for manipulation. Plus, it let him start a war where he could get rid of the Jedi.

That's simple?!! It sounds needlessly complicated to me. Alright, well what about this: How did a guy from Naboo become a Sith lord? I'm guessing that he was talking about himself as Darth Plagus' apprentice. Naboo doesn't seem to me to be the hub of evil activities, where did those two meet? And thanks Shep, good lookin out.

But I thought the Sith used to be an actual race, not just a cult. And why would anybody want to be a Sith when they know they're going to get killed by their apprentice one day anyway? And why would a Sith want to rule the galaxy? What's so important in that? Did he have different ideas about taxation or the exploitaion of natural resources?

I think sometimes you just have to accept that you aren't the target audience.

Time for some ancient Sith history! Once upon a time the Sith ruled the galaxy. They were everywhere and they essentially wiped out all of the jedi. With the galaxy under their control the Sith had nothing left to conquer. Eventually the sith fell into a civil war; this war was every Sith for themselves. The war almost obliterated the Sith. At the end of this war a Sith emerged by the name of Darth Bane who was one of the only survivors. He made a decree that from that day forward there would only be one master and one apprentice. He did this because there could never be another war that would wipe out the Sith again. His logic was that no student could take out a sith lord so the more powerful would always be in control. This war however had cost the sith their control of the galaxy. They have been trying to get it back ever since.
Since so little is known about Palpatine we don't know what era of Sith he is. Some people have said that he may be even older than Yoda which means he could have fought in the Sith Wars. This would explain why he wanted to take back control of the galaxy since he used to be the party in control.
I may have a few facts wrong but theforce.net should have a pretty good explanation. ;D

Could someone please explain to me how in the original trilogy (eps 4-6), aliens used their own, cool languages that were sometimes subtitled (i.e. Huttese) and sometimes not (i.e. Jawas)... but then in the new trilogy (eps 1-3), aliens all spoke English with atrocious (borderline racist) accents (like Watto, Nute Gunray, etc)?
This, to me, is the real reason the new trilogy sucked.

Nah...he just has his head up his ass... I don't see a difference. One's chemically induced...the other is a natural state.

So if I'm not the target audience, who is? Is George himself the target audience? Why is he such a greedy selfish film maker?
