Val Lewton didn't make movies: he filmed bad dreams.
Dark, shadowy figures; always a threat lurking somewhere that was never clearly in sight at any time.
He really examined the pyschology of fear and how it can build up into panic.
He should be studied in film schools.

When I was in college, I took a film study class and we saw "Cat People" and "I Walked With a Zombie" Great films very spooky and atmospheric. I think he is underappreciated as a director, but just my opinion.

Jacques Tourneur was the director Newton worked with on Cat People, etc. Tourneur was a MASTER.
Watch "Out of the Past" with Robert Mitchum and Jane Greer. Tourneur spoke little English. When he was directing Out of the Past, he told Ms. Greer: "First half of movie: good girl. Second half: not good girl." Her performance as a femme fatal is classic!
He also did I Walked With A Zombie. WONDERFUL movie, and The Leopard Man, one of the creepiest murder mysteries ever filmed.

I grew up on these....love them. The ones Jaques directed are the best...though I think there were other directors, yes?
