www.whywefight.comThis looks like a very erudite and insightful documentary by director Eugene Jarecki (Trials of Henry Kissinger). Give the trailer a look and enter the sight for more clips, the Eisenhower fairwell address was prophetic.

WOW that looks really good and balanced documentary. Can't wait to see it. I think you're being sarcastic, broadsword? This doesn't look balanced at all. Despite interviewing some people on the right it's clear from this trailer what side he's on. I don't buy this about America being an empire. None of our military bases have been forced upon any of these countries. I say this as a person who is more or less of the left...maybe someone can convince me otherwise, but I don't see it.

I think the movie will be somewhat critical of the reasons behind our current war and military, but it will be a far better approach of examining it than some agitprop piece from Micheal Moore. From what I viewed, the main theme of the movie is the infringement of the military-industrial complex (as phrased by Eisenhower) on the democratic government. I enjoyed The Trials of Henry Kissinger and thought that was well done, granted Christopher Hitchens was interviewed quite a bit for that movie, and he does come across as somewhat of a wind-bag, but the it was about equal time between his critics and supporters.

I haven't checked out that Why We Fight site yet, but strictly speaking US bases in Germany, Japan and Italy were forced on them. The circumstances were such though that I don't think that disproves LMD's point. I'll have to see in what sense "empire" is being used before I'd hazard any more of an opinion. Waldojeffers, I love your signature etc. Ever seen The Inner Circle?

That was the one about Stalin's movie projectionist, right? I saw it on the History Channel a number of years ago. Beria played by Bob Hoskins(sp?) was pretty good, heh.

That's the one. I haven't seen it for a while myself, but I remember being impressed by Hoskins. Wow, who'd have thought two of us would have Lavrenti Pavlovich as an avatar on an MST3k board? Maybe I'll hunt around for one of Yezhov or Yagoda.

As Ijon pointed out, this is an erroneous statement.

An empire is "A political unit having an extensive territory or comprising a number of territories or nations and ruled by a single supreme authority.". Anyone who has been stationed in a foreign country with the US military knows we have NO authority in anything that goes on off post. We have bases in Germany and Japan, because the treaties stated they could not have a large military, and there were other countries that threatened them after the War (Russia and China, for example). They could not be left unprotected. AND those countries now do not want us to leave, because our forces are such a boon to the local (and government) economy.
That said, I do want to see this film, but I have no doubt that it is slanted. But I will see it before I EVER watch a Michael Moore propaganda film.
