You know, a lot of people that I've spoken to have called Shrek 2 "superior" to the original movie.
After carefully watching the two, however, I just can't find much of a justification for this claim.
The original Shrek was a clever fairy tale, roughly twisting the Ugly Duckling and Beauty & The Beast fairy tales, while throwing in a bunch of good jokes about fairy tales in general and Disney movies in particular.
The sequel was...I dunno. It wasn't really a fairy tale, it was more of a mob movie. It lost a lot of its folksy charm.
Then again, maybe the people who think it's a better movie are thinking from a purely "teen comedy" style of movie. In that case there might be some vague justification for having this opinion.
That could be my problem. Maybe I was expecting a Fairy Tale With Comedy, and instead received a Comedy With Fairy Tale Elements. So maybe my preconceptions about it ruined it in a way that I wouldn't have cared about otherwise.
Anyway, this is just something that's been on my mind lately.

They are both fine movies. The first one is great and very original, and the second one is exceptional for a sequel.
I really can't decide.

I watched Shrek 2 first and then Shrek. Personally I don't see what the hype about Shrek was. "2" was much funnier and I thought, had a better plot.

I loathed Shrek.
It was an overhyped misfire of a movie, filled with way too many inside jokes (i.e. unfunny), and way too many pop-culture jokes that are already outdated.
The first 10 minutes were great. The setup was a slam dunk- a send-up of fairy tale stories. How can you miss? By leaving the swamp, that's how. Then it became a buddy/road trip movie that failed on every level.
Hey! They slammed Disney! Haw haw! Wow! A spoof of professional wrestling! Brilliant! Oh boy, yet another pun on the word "ass"! How could they possibly top this? What's this? A Matrix spoof? Genius.
And nothing says "timeless" like Smashmouth. Especially when they're singing a Monkees song. Worse than the Monkees.
And by the way, can someone explain to me why the line, "I'm makin' waffles!" is supposed to be funny? No? No one? I thought not.
Maybe I should head over to the "movies that make me angry" thread.

...wow. You know, I'd actually forgotten pretty much every thing that you'd mentioned about Shrek since the last time I watched it, Mr. Atari. Maybe I just blank out the bad stuff.
And I watched it on Saturday, so I blank out bad stuff pretty fast, I guess.

I liked the first Shrek due to the fairy tale spoofing 1st half of the movie, even though it sinks to completely conventional mediocrity in the 2nd half of the movie. Shrek 2, though, was pretty weak throughout, with only Puss-in-Boots and some bits with the Fairy Godmother standing out. Too many of the jokes were just throwaway topical gags that will age very poorly for this animated "modern classic" And both movies use of run-of-the-mill pop hits of the day for music ("Livin' La Vida Loca" - are you kidding me???) was completely idiotic in the extreme. The best song in either movie was the "Fairy Godmother Song" in Shrek 2, which (I think) was the only original song in Shrek 2! More original songs spoofing Disney Musicals would've helped that movie a lot!

I liked them, much to my surprise.
2 had the cat. (Look at those eyes!) How can you say "neuter"?

They were both pretty enjoyable, but I'll give the nod to Shrek 2 because it was cool enough to have a Nick Cave song in it.
