I just looked this up. I don't think I've seen it. Written by Norman Bates and that musical guy. Interesting.....

While I'm not a big fan of SiL, I had a film instructor once base some impressive lessons on the screenplay to Tootsie and I can't believe how tight certain elements of that script are.

"Third Man" should have been WAY higher.
Some lesser entries: "Witness" (LOL) "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (Fun, but hardly great writing). "Star Wars" (George Lucas was more of an idea man than a good writer. He needed Lawrence "The Big Chill" Kasden to help write his best film "Empire"), "Tootsie" (There are much better comedies), "Memento" (too much of a stunt. Not enough substance. And some plot holes you could fly a plane through. LOL).
Some glaring omissions IMO:
Vertigo
Badlands (or any Terrence Malick!)
Secrets & Lies (or any Mike Leigh!)
Animal House & Caddyshack (the late great Doug Kenny wrote comedies that have become part of the popular culture)
Faces (easily John Cassavetes' best, least self-indulgent script)
Hud (better than McMurty's novel IMO. Lots of subtle stuff going on)

Barry Levinson's "Diner" is another one I can't believe they left out. Great dialog!

I'm surprised 'Bridge on the River Kwai' is so far down the list...
YAY! The Producers is on the list! And Patton.
Wow. There's a lot of great movies on this list.

Yes, LMD, "Shakespeare in Love". It's great and put the regular conversation of Elizabethan England out there for us to imagine that perhaps the Bard got his idea from something someone said. Now to read the list.....

Another glaring omission..."House of Games" by David Mamet.
