Paramount has released a "Special Edition" of the Paul W.S. Anderson movie Event Horizon. (Best Buy has it on sale for $13) While I know that a lot of people hate Anderson for his other films, this one never got the attention it deserved (save Berman and Braga doing an absolute rip off of it for that one season of "Enterprise"). And now, this DVD release has the film put back to the director's original edit before Paramount suits started fooling with it. Anyone else love this film even in it's edited version?

Me. I don't know if I've seen the unedited version. This is one of my favorite movies ever. It's a great combination of scifi and horror. When my boyfriend (at the time) first showed it to me, we stopped and watched frame-by-frame the scene where they find the recording of the last crews' initial ignition of the drive engine. YIKES!!! I like Sam Neill a lot. He's been in several horror movies I've seen, the names of which escape my memory at the moment.

I believe this is the first time it's been seen unedited since the test audiences....and according to the review, even then it wasn't complete yet.
But Paramount freaked and started demanding changes.
Considering this and what they've done to Star Trek and other stuff recently, can we just take all sci-fi away from them?

I saw this a long time ago. I don't remember a lot about it but I enjoyed it. Not a great movie, but definitely watchable.

My original impression was: take one part Alien, one part Hellraiser, lots of (okay) special effects, and voila!!
I'd be interested in seeing the director's cut to give him the benefit of the doubt.

And now, this DVD release has the film put back to the director's original edit before Paramount suits started fooling with it. I bought this today. It does not have the director's original edit. It has about 2 hours of extras, including deleted scenes, planned scenes which were never filmed, a making-of documentary, plus the whole movie with commentary, but it's the same running time as the original.

Okay, I misunderstood. Still, according to the reviews this transfer and the sound quality is better than the original release. And the extras do try to fill in the gaps between what was released and what they tried to make. It's amazing that Paramount Video would let them explain how the stupidity of their own studio hobbled this production in the first place. Maybe someday Criterion could take a stab at a DVD reconstruction of this...

It does have a lot of extras. I'm especially interested in the deleted scenes. But, yes, the review made it sound like a very good edition. I may watch it this weekend.

I'd be interested in reading a review of this movie by someone who liked it. I watched it once because my husband was watching it, and I left the room before the end because I thought it was just so stupid. Yet so many of you all seem to like it! So maybe you could show me what there is to like about this movie.

So maybe you could show me what there is to like about this movie. That's hard to do without giving away a lot of the plot.... But I'll give you this from a review of the new DVD and the link if you want to read more. "It is 2047. After seven years missing in action, the starship Event Horizon has been located in the vast outer banks of our solar system. Her disappearance was the worst space disaster in the history of man's exploration of the stars and officials want to know what happened. A rescue mission lead by Captain Miller (Laurence Fishburne, The Matrix) and the crew of the Coast Guard vessel Lewis and Clark are off to salvage what is left and hunt for survivors. They are joined by Horizon designer/inventor Dr. Bill Weir (Sam Neill, The Piano), who hopes to discover what became of his experimental craft and its innovative gravity drive. The last communication from the ship was scrambled—and very disturbing. Though it appears intact upon arrival, something is not quite right with the Event Horizon. Everyone, from the ship's doctor (Jason Isaacs, The Patriot) to various members of the crew (Joely Richardson, nip/tuck, Kathleen Quinlan (Apollo13, The Doors, Jack Noseworthy, Breakdown), thinks something evil lurks inside the ship. As visions of dark and disquieting horrors begin filling their minds, they become convinced of a presence beyond their own. Sure enough, the fate of the original crew and the reality about where Event Horizon has been provides shocking insight into the nasty nature of the Universe—both the visible and the unseen.... Frankly, Event Horizon is guilty of all its flaws. It is also a movie that surpasses them time and time again to be an effective, if evasive, chiller...." I'm also going to give you a link to another great film that just came out on DVD: Magic. And if you want a good laugh, here's the review of the "Monster Edition" of that god-awful version of Godzilla

I watched this last night (thus the new avatar ;D ). This is the 3rd time I've seen it, and damnit, it still scares the crap out of me. I think the cast is excellent, especially watching Sam Neill...well...you know what he does. And Laurence Fishburne is da man.
This edition is fantastic. The print is gorgeous, and the sound is incredible. It has three deleted scenes, mostly for gore, and I do mean gore. Lots of other extras, like 5 making-of documentaries, old trailers, etc. Well worth it, if you like this film.
