That moment when Spidey realizes he's leaving Kevin Feige for Avi Arad, Amy Pascal, and Tom Rothman.

Not surprised, I felt they'd come to a deal. Oh, and of course, Spidey is going to cross over into Venom, etc, why wouldn't he? They were part of his comic lineage. (Morbius debuted in Amazing #101, I remember it well). So he'll be tied to 2 studio universes - each independent of one another. This according to screenrant, who say that Sony was the big winner in this negotiation. screenrant.com/spider-man-movie-deal-sony-win-marvel/

Oh dear! I just got a Regal Unlimited pass. My poor theater is going to go broke because I was half their business.
Anyway, my first victim was Joker! Seemed fitting that I'm popping my cherry with a comic book movie. The only other thing that would be more fitting is if I got to see Godzilla for the fifth time.
So, I made it no secret that I wasn't enthused about the trailers for this movie. I stand by those sentiments, because this movie had quite possibly the douchiest advertising campaign I've ever seen. That and the self superiority of some of the pre-Joker-is-the-best-movie-of-the-year buzz made me sick to my stomach.
I want you to know all of this so you know I mean it when I say the movie is pretty great.
There is some controversy surrounding the movie glorifying a killer in the wake of multiple mass shootings, and it's not unwarranted. There are times during the movie I felt like doing a sarcastic clap and saying "Congratulations, Todd Phillips. You've made the ultimate incel revenge fantasy." It's very easy to read the movie as a celebration of this doormat turned anarchist.
...but...
The movie, to its credit, does a lot to point out this is not a good man, but in fact a very disturbed individual. If it portrays the Joker as the hero of this story that's because the Joker sees himself as the hero, which is what most would claim makes a great villain in the first place. And the movie shines in just little individual moments that add up to the creation of such a personality. I especially loved the explanation that his chronic laughter is actually brain damage, in which he laughs when he's disturbed, angry, or sad. It's fun to see him switch toward the end as he convinces himself there's nothing wrong, and he's really just laughing because he finds these situations funny (spoiler alert, I guess, but the ending is this dude becomes the Joker...we all know this). There are also little touches that keep the viewer guessing as to what onscreen is actually happening versus what's happening in his head.
Like Ledger, Joaquin Phoenix is getting Oscar buzz for this role. It's not unwarranted, because he is very, very good in this movie. His transformation feels very natural and organic, and when he gpes full Joker at the end, he's everything you want him to be. Is he better than Ledger? The two Jokers are very different, but I'm debating in my head about which performance works better. He's a halfway between Ledger and...no, not Nicholson, but rather Romero. It's fun to see his play with the Joker as a showman, rather than a mastermind.
It's definitely worth seeing, and a lot better than I thought it was going to be. Now, I'm off to make this Unlimited membership pay for itself. I haven't seen Lion King yet. Might as well.

Joker Ranking: 1. The Dark Knight 2. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm 3. Joker 4. The Lego Batman Movie 5. Batman (1966) 6. Batman (1989) 7. Suicide Squad

She died, then she got better.
And Mr. Sunday did a breakdown super quick this morning...

Looks not bad. Has a bit of a CA: Winter Soldier vibe with the political thriller side of it. Curious to see what David Harbour will bring to the whole thing.

DC couldn't let Marvel have their moment with their female led movie. Here's Wonder Woman 1984 to totally steal the show.

Following Black Panther's surprising award season last year, Joker missed out on the Golden Globe for best drama to 1917, but Joaquin Phoenix took home the Best Actor in a Drama trophy while Hildur Guðnadóttir won for best score.
Now the road to the Oscars begins. Though my only hope is a nomination for Jojo Rabbit.

In non award news, Disney is set to finally unleash that mythic New Mutants movie that supposedly exists. They also put together a trailer that sucks far less than the one Fox made when it was supposed to come out in 2017.
It kept getting pushed back for reshoots, but apparently those never happened and the director told Disney he had no desire to change the movie, so they're releasing it as is. Hopefully the artist is right and not the studio.

My big fear is that they Peyton Reed it. Reed was fine for Ant-Man, but Doctor Strange demands somebody with a vision and not comedy sense. With less than a year and a half for development, Multiverse of Madness could be in trouble if its date doesn't budge. And if they do push it, they might as well have kept Derrickson.
This sucks. This was the phase four movie I was looking forward to the most.

I haven't heard any rumors on who will replace him, but I'm getting worried. And now that you mention it, I hope they don't actually get Peyton Reed, since I don't think there's an Ant-Man movie on the docket right now. Like you said, he was fine for that series, but for Doctor Strange? Definitely not so sure. This is bumming me out.

Oh I didn't mean to imply they'd get Peyton Reed specifically, just that they'd aim for a "get it done" director just to make a release date.
If this were ten years ago, I would have said Brett Ratner instead.

I hear you, but I had thought of Reed before you even mentioned it. Come to think of it, is Ratner free? God help me, that was a joke.
At least they didn't let Derrickson get halfway done making it and then give him the boot, ala Solo.
